Life by XLN Audio

Say you bring up a recording into Life; you get to work and create a few beat/pattern variations…

Is there no way to say it all in one go (as a session)?
It seems that you currently have to save each beat individually… have I got that right/wrong?

Each variation you choose to keep is saved under the “source” beat it’s derived from. In practice that makes for a great workflow IMO…for instance, randomize until you find something cool, make a few tweaks, then a.) bounce it to audio and b.) also save the variation. That way you can mess around with the waveform and have that sense of commitment, but can also go back and mess around with saved-in-Life variation if you want to tweak further. Perhaps you want to add a little variety to the final bar of an 8-bar loop; maybe you record the variation again, while tweaking some of the parameters.

This is pretty smooth and intuitive IMO.

I totally agree with you, and that’s how I use it too… I like the workflow up to that point; I’d just like to be able to save the session fully that I’m looking at, knowing each beat/variation is saved. Having to go through them one by one is a bit of a chore to an otherwise great workflow.

Oh cool - yeah I see what you mean. That would be a nice addition.

On another note (in case you’re listening, XLN) it would be nice if you the Decay parameter could be extended. Even maxed out, it doesn’t allow a trigger’s sound to last very long. It would be nice to have the option of extending this (similar to how you might do my manually adjusting a sample’s release in, say, Ableton’s Simpler.).

Wondering after 2 years what do you think of it ?
Did you stay on the internal Mic of your phones or did you invest on a zoom or rode to plug into your phone to enhance the recordings ?
DO you clean the recording with RX to remove the bg noise before to import in LIFE ? ( I didn’t check if it’s doable a cleaning step in another app in between )

I find this app very cool but the quality a bit blurry so I’m wondering if it’s the internal mic of my phone.

XO & LIFE are really some of the best investments I made this last 5 years. Too bad Cosmos Waves in not at the same level especially sync while previewing. Loopcloud app still kill it everyday

…no worries here…each single catch u made, can be twisted in various different results and each variant can be saved as part of the same “preset”…

only a different source snippet, is a new “preset” u have to pick and load from the main list…life can only wiggle and twiddle one audio snippet at a time…but this snippet can have various faces/iterations which can all be stored alongside/within that same preset…

meanwhile, no one can stop u, apart from ur cpu, from using many individual instances of life at the same time…

@William_WiLD …i personally, think, my phones internal mic is almost too good in picking up aaaaall the shit around me…and no matter what it is, may it even just ground noise, can mutate into intresting, rhythmical loops and whatnot else i’m always left stunned by… so, any imperfection of sonic catches out in the field are welcome…if it needs prestine audio source material, i go for more serious, pre recorded sources to choose from…

First Experiment

  • Setup Audiomodern Loopmix on a midi channel
  • Setup XLN Life on a midi channel
  • Setup XLN Life DAW Recorder on the Master

Throw a bunch of 6 audio loops inside Loopmix (it’s very important to smartly choose them like a drum kit, if any musical key pay attention to this it could lock your project into a scale, better to wrote it somewhere)

try to get some transients heavy materials (muted guitars, pizzicato strings, rimshots, voice, electric noise, wood percussion, plucks… short sounds)

Let Loopmix do its thing but get a bunch of transients from different timbre that sounds interesting in terms of variety …

Record into XLN Life
Find something interesting in LIFE don’t forget to sync to the DAW, Syncopation is your friend… export when you have a groove, a vibe (be aware of the XLN Life effects assigned to those sound - export layers : export it dry / export it wet (that way you have options for later) you can add the kick from XLN LIFE to help you to get a weird groove.

Very effective.
it’s possible that those 4 layers are too much, keep your favorites. Less is More especially if you add percussions after.

Notes: if you don’t have Loopmix, use Loop Flip

Second Experiment
Field record some of my percussions + Field record at Café Le Modjo
(percolator, door, steam nozzle, coffee grinding machine, baby foot)
