Life by XLN Audio

It’s on my ‘dive into it over Xmas’ list, but I have done some messing about with it and like it.

As @tendingtropic said, I see it as a textural source too, and I really like the DAW input plugin… it makes it simple to resample any track/buss/mix from any part of a track and use it somewhere else.

I’m also seeing it like an extra 4 channels for XO, which is one of my favourite go-to’s for making tracks happen.

Heads up that you can get Life for $80.76 from Best Service using the new year coupon HNY-20-24

Just a warning if you are in a hurry, it’s next ‘working’ day key delivery, so may not get it until Tuesday.

I’m seeing $89 with the discount code, but can choose a free gift, one of which is a pretty expansive-sounding foley sample pack of various cars and streets.

Looks like they put the price up to $109, it was previously $100.76.

Ahhh gotcha, must have noticed their profit margins falling. Still a good deal with those samples.

It looked interesting to me so I got the trial. I played with it enthusiastically. I used the field recorder to record traffic, my daughters pottery class, a 12 string strum, girls laughing and the list goes on. The recordings are so varied and just sit well in a track that needs this. I found it to be fascinating. Also it’s great to create something inspirational. Be careful not to let it get boring. Vary the rhythm and volume. Haven’t tried to automate variations yet. MIDI drag and drop even waves and stems. I bought it because I can definitely use it. Glad to have it in my back pocket

Welcome to Elektronauts! I found the LIFE app and plugin very useful as well. It’s an inspiring addition to the studio and creates awesome percussive tracks.

I’m also loving Life. It’s great for vocal chops and random ambient found sound. Turning the density down and exporting the patterns out to edit the midi goes a long way towards making the patterns less same-y.

…so, yes…had second thoughts and skipped my first “advice” for the better and also the trial version…
purchased it right away instead and was not left dissapointed…it’s a reasonable tool with endless options to surprise urself and end up with all sorts of sonic funkyness and groovery out of anything and whatever u feed it with…
given all that randomness, it always provides precise options to finetune ur results to any further liking…

keen to pick this up, but damn I can’t decide between this and Serato Sample 2. Plugins are getting expensive.

Serato Sample 2 is going to do more for you- Stem separation, BPM and Key syncing etc…Life is instant gratification and it does what it does (make rytmy beats out of anything) very well. Stuff is expensive if you don’t get them in sales, I got them both but I paid about $80 for each (Life has only just come off sale) and it seemed about right…

This is a great app and comes up with almost infinite ideas that I would never get close to using other plugins, so I heartily recommend at least downloading the demo and giving it a whirl :+1:

Sweetwater still has it for sale for $108 if anyone is interested

I recall there was a similar talk around XO. Initially I think it was something like 179. But these days it’s around for a lot less. I don’t expect XLN to drop the price, but this time time next year I wouldn’t be surprised to see it for 40-50% off.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Love Life V-Day sale. XLN and Native Instruments have been doing sales damn near every month somewhere. I remember when both companies rarely did sales at all but that isn’t the case anymore. For me, the real price for anything is the lowest price I’ve seen it at.

At this point I would never pay full retail for anything from either outfit. Once a brand become Plug-in Boutique regulars, I simply wait. I’ll get you cheap or free, thrown in with another purchase.

I also see this coming to splice or rent2own sooner than later. They’ll want a lot of users for Life. It’s essential to development.

Yeah i won’t buy at full. I’ve got loopmix as well but I don’t use it as much. But Life does seem intuitive.

Life isn’t really comparable to Loopmix. Worth checking the demos to understand why.

Does that mean Life is incomparably better, say ? Any quick summary would be useful, I watched videos for both and concluded I would only really get it if I bought both.

I have both, and although they have different kinds of UI’s, both are able to create instantaneous beat mangling results.
Loopmix is more of a one dimensional slicing tool and is easier to throw multiple samples into it from your sound library, but the results just don’t do it for me and seem quite boring. The UI just seems old an uninspiring compared with Life.
Life on the other hand is slightly different as is focused on field recording captured from your phone, which is then synced with the cloud and mirrored onto your desktop, so not as easy to throw in samples from your sample library unless you record them via your phone mic first - I guess this could give them a nice lower quality sound. The results you get from Life and it’s tools, which include eq, pitch, effects + more, and a really nice set of sample arrangement/pattern structure and sound variation controls gives much more impressive results (sound-wise and pattern-wise) in pretty much every situation, and allows quite unique automation functionality for on the fly live production.
Put it this way, Life would be my choice if I could only have one of the two apps. I don’t use Loopmix at all.
Describing differences between apps is quite time consuming and probably doesn’t give you the best idea of what to expect from your personal user experience, so it’s always best to demo the apps - there’s no reason not to when they are available from the devs.
cheers
