I’m still waiting for someone to make an Additive synthesiser in hardware. ![]()

can it play the boîte diabolique?
after seeing the Diosynth, i would love to see their take on a midi guitar
any chance the Leviasyth is an FM SynthGuitar?
We do still have A LOT of open territory to fill with speculation, and it is still quite unclear of the when on a Leviasynth. I think as a stated policy – in the past ASM avoids long gaps between announcement and shipping.
FM SynthGuitar covers two main areas for our hopefully very short phase of speculation, the playing interface, and the synthesis technology.
I recall something else Glen said in an interview somewhere, about ( paraphrasing ) why do you want to just redo something someone else has already done.
So while the category of “8-oscillator algorithmic synthesizer” is kind of specific it does leave worlds of possibilities, and certainly worlds outside of FM.
Plus the HS already does muliple operator FM really well, just not in the conventional way, that goes way back to DX days, and seems to be de rigueur now.
Additive maybe, but are eight sine wave oscillators enough ? Probably not. So some other approach on additive maybe. Don’t know.
Algorithmic synthesis is really open to any set of algorithms used for sound generation.
And as to the player interface, hard to beat keyboards, with variations added, like the ribbon, or like the Arturia Morphy or now the ROLI Airwave.
It could also just be a module, with a nice price, and a wonderfully complete communication interface.
Hopefully it’s only a short wait.
Given that it was written up in the manual for the Diosynth, I think it is probable that the when is soon™, however only ASM knows what delays they are having, if any, on the release timeline.
This feels a bit like they were planning on releasing Leviasynth far in advance of Diosynth, that they had come very far with it, but hit a road block and decided to go first out with Diosynth to keep some of that new-product revenue coming in while finishing Leviasynth
Obviously this is my take on it and I might as well be very wrong on this
That’s possible. Does it include forgetting to edit that reference out of the Dio manual by accident ? Also possible it just gets a little less likely.
It does, if they were so much further ahead with Levia than DO that it didn’t seem conceivable at that time that the Levia would be released after
I’ve never done that sort of major commit without a last read, especially with something so short. And i am not particularly OCD.
That sentence is sitting right on top of everything and i spotted it right away. But it is possible.
Fair point, guess only time will tell ![]()
About the Fairlight CMI synth from around 1980
- Additive Synthesis – The Fairlight CMI can generate sounds by adding together multiple sine waves at different harmonics. It can sum up to 32 harmonics for a more complex sound ( with the later models ).
- Wavetable Synthesis – The CMI’s system can also manipulate complex waveforms stored in memory. You can move through a wavetable, changing the harmonic content in real time to create evolving sounds.
- Sampling and Manipulation – It can record and manipulate real-world sounds. This sampling capability is often combined with algorithmic synthesis techniques to create entirely new sounds from a recorded source.
- Sequencing – The Fairlight includes powerful sequencing facilities, which worked in tandem with its synthesis capabilities to arrange and automate the performance of musical ideas. This allowed for complex, pre-programmed sequences of notes and sounds.
- Real-time Control – Users can change the characteristics of the sound in real time by manipulating parameters and envelopes, which can control the movement through wavetables and modulate other synthesis parameters.
Forty five years later,
Using my imagination.
Ashun Sound Machine ( along with Medeli ) will be showing at NAMM in fifty days. No surprise at that, all they have to do is brave LA traffic to get there.
In their blurb it says,
ASM is about creating musical instruments that empower musicians to unleash their creativity and expressiveness. Design, ease of use, quality of sound, fun factors are at the core of our products. We strive to break barriers to bring powerful engine and high quality musical instruments to the market.
They don’t mention the Leviasynth. No surprise at that. They don’t even mention the Diosynth ! They do list out the four Hydrasynths individually to fill up their listing.
Given the reference in the Diosynth manual, i’ve got to believe there will be some sort of hints on the beastly one at NAMM … or more !
Anyone going ?
EDIT : Medeli is actually not listed as attending.
