After mentioning this thread on the piano/synth thread, I thought I’d bump it with a personal update.

I finally made it into the advanced flute program at the Yamaha/Yamano Gakki school I’ve been studying at, which kind of blows my mind that I actually I got here. I’m still really enjoying the lessons and, like with learning a language, the advanced stuff is when it starts to get good.

I’m finishing up a third piece by John Barry (Thunderball) at the moment, and then my teacher and I are moving into to the area I want to specialize in, jazz improvisation.

My teacher actually recommended we go with a curriculum developed by a guy named Yasutoshi Inamori who incidentally played flute on the first track of the killer Japanese jazz compilation below.

1970s jazz is right up my alley, so definitely going in the right direction. I have enjoyed the 1960s-1970s film and TV score stuff I worked on this past year, and the music theory and rhythm chops I’m going to be working on next is really going to carry over into all of my own personal projects and to other instruments as well I think. Really excited.

Someone on another music forum was the reason I started lessons in the first place, so hopefully I can inspire someone else to pick up an instrument later in life.
