Korg SQ-64 Poly Sequencer

I could see that being the case!

(I used to test the USB stack for Windows way back when over at MS.) Familiar with some of its weirdnesses in various modes. Well, really it works when everything is done to spec, but that’s not always how things are done.

Korg replied that they would be happy to pass on my suggestion for a firmware update to engineering for consideration.

I hope they will be able to get this into the next firmware update for whichever device is at fault. I am pleasantly surprised support is willing to pass this on to engineering and doesn’t see it as a futile exercise.

That’s a bit odd. I’ve been powering my SQ-64 with my 2600m for over a month now with no issues.

My favorite part of my Minilogue XD is the sequencer. Can someone who owns/owned this tell me I will get much more from SQ-64?

For example you can edit the gate length, velocity, notes and one parameter per step easily (ok, the Korg-way-of-easy) and many things more

In my opinion only more steps and their variations
Plus easier editing

Korg sq64 very strange device because it’s have a very shit firmware, not intuitive, bad manual and some fog perspective. I think electron model sample much better for sequencing for another gear.

yeah when i had the sq64 it had just a very weird workflow, especially if you come from elektron. that said i love the sequencer on my monologue. it’s quite different to the sq64 in my opinion.

I am sold! Thanks.

I want to mostly use it for my Minilogue XD. I figured since they are both KORG, it will be a natural fit regardless of their limitations. The 16 step sequencer on Minilogue XD is great but started to find it not enough…especially when I use the Motion Mode, it ends up being very limited.

I so, so wanted the SQ-64 to be amazing, reading the manual is pretty cool–but actually working with it just feels like my shoes are tied together, and I don’t exactly know why. Very poor flow. They are fairly cheap though, and you can set it up to be a 3 channel MIDI to CV/GATE converter, which that alone would probably be worth it for some people.

I keep hope in the heart of my gear hearts that one day it will get the firmware update it deserves.

That’s the only sequencer KORG has. It will be either the last or hopefully just the beginning. I am getting one soon and let’s see how it works for me.

I love the SQ-64 hardware and aesthetic, but as others said the workflow is more like a workpuddle. Would be a great candidate or open-sourcing.

How do you feel it compares to Play or Squid as a sequencer? Thanks!

Just got mine today. This is the very first test. Every single thing you can hear is sequenced by SQ-64. Sorry for the cheesy melody.

I did the latest update and now I can’t sequence anything in Ableton. No issues with sequencing hardware (I tested Minilogue XD, Softpop 2 and Kobol Expander) as expected. Somehow it doesn’t communicate with the software… Any computer/software savvy person that can help? I guess the easiest thing is just a reset but I want to know what I did “wrong” and fix it.

It works in MPC Software… I don’t know much about Ableton so I am sure I messed up some setting or forgot to click somewhere…who knows.

Do you have the MIDI I/O set up properly in Ableton?

Inputs:
SQ-64_MIDI OUT 1
SQ-64_MIDI OUT 2 (Use this one)

Outputs:
SQ-64_MIDI OUT 1
SQ-64_MIDI OUT 2
SQ-64_SEQ (Use this one)

I don’t use the other I/O.

This is what I have currently:

EDIT: thanks it fixed everything except drum sequencing. Not ideal but I don’t sequence drums so I will take this as a win.

Let’s say I sequenced 64 steps. Is there a way to only play 1-8, 9-16 etc. Mute/unmute? Or a shortcut?

yep… Loop mode allows for this. From the manual…

It’s pretty handy/fun.
