Korg OPSIX

Now I have all 4 native plugins and it’s quite funny how features are spread in a subtle way. Opsix has a couple of effects not found on the others - comb filters, granulator and plain distortion

It does look good! I worry about the lack of mod wheel and pitch bend controls that I use as macros. The conversion seems more appealing in that respect.

If only they would add a macro screen where you could use the 6 encoders for whatever.

I really like my converted Opsix.

It’s kind of massive still for my tastes, but it does so much. I even chopped the Decksaver (rather crudely) to fit the halved shape.

I’ve also come to terms more with the controls for paging through operators and it’s feeling more fluid.

And good grief, they undersold the virtual patching.

Yes. The ability to connect any operator to any others, along with all the synthesis modes, really shifts the value of the Opsix to me—almost in a “keep-it-don’t-sell-it” way—and makes up for the weaknesses of the keyboard and sequencer. There just isn’t another small hardware synth that does this set of things, patchwise, and with relative clarity.

I will never fully exploit it all, but it’s nice to have such a well-stocked laboratory to flail around in.

Yeah it’s excellent!

I was checking out this @OscillatorSink video last night and have been thinking about a lot of ideas he shares, especially modulators at super low frequencies, and tried a few tips. I even tried a few things at fixed frequencies and it’s nice and weird. I’ll never need to go modular with how wild FM is.

Oscillator Sink is a gift from the gods, as far as I’m concerned. His Volca FM and Opsix videos still teach me and I rewatch them. I sometimes think that people who badmouth all youtube synth channels, as a category, don’t really understand how hard it was to get this information before the Internet. A couple magazines articles or a synth book if you were lucky, the manual if it was readable … other than that you were on your own …

Fantastic!

Nice demo indeed. I got a little more understanding of Buchla-styled synthesis and I think now Opsix has all the building blocks to emulate complex oscillator and LPG. Or was I just mesmerized by these “percussion” bells lol

You’re never gonna believe this, but I might have just the video for you!

How are y’all enjoying the Opsix module now that it’s been out for a while? I’m really tempted to snag one.

There a module up locally for a good price but its a tough sell when I could go for a DN2, I really want the multitimbrality.

have you tried out the sound design w/ the software demo yet?

personally i’m very happy w/ the module purchase. i like the tactility and immediacy you can get from it, but it’s not miles better than other options (Korg or otherwise) necessarily. the quirkiness & limitations the design presents are why i like it…some things are maybe easier w/ the software version, others easier on hardware.

i do wish it was multi-timbrale. i would like a little more variety in the effects options…just quantity but also quality of them. but overall i wont be selling it off anytime soon, very much into the uniqueness of it. but it’s sure not for everyone.

has anyone figured out if the opsix can upload scala files or any microtonal scales?

any luck?

no

No microtonal support in opsix unfortunately

I should have shared it here, but a few weeks ago, after not using my blowout-sale purchased Opsix for about 6 months? The screen was absolutely dead. :skull_and_crossbones:

:stethoscope:Good news is that I was able to replace the screen with a new one. The bad news is that it was likely overpriced and that might be the norm for these parts.

In case anyone needs to do the same, I bought mine from here:

I followed instructions here (and good to know, likely scammers on eBay use the leading photo in many of their product listings:

While I’m waiting for my Tonverk to arrive next week, I’d like to add my thanks for your opsix videos too. I was inspired to try emulating the OSCar, specifically the Filter Width control. So on a couple of patches I have the mod wheel acts on two Filter operators, moving the cutoff frequency up on one and down on the other. The two resonance peaks do get a bit “voicy” as I’d hoped. You get different results with the operators in series or parallel, as you might expect.
I’m going to try sequencing my opsix from the Tonverk: I don’t expect multisampling to capture everything an opsix patch can do.

You can’t do anything with explicitly defining other microtonal scales but you can get it to use other equal temperaments than 12 tone.

If you set an operator to a fixed rather than ratio mode then V-patch keyboard to that operator’s tuning in different amounts you can find other interesting tunings. I’ve made patches with 19 and 24TET for example.
