Korg ms10 beaten rusty detuned

went to see a korg ms10, the old one (second hand) … today… that thing had rusty patch holes everywhere, the mod wheel didnt work…

rusty patches all over, cigarette burn in one of its keys, the housing was missing a piece on one side, main volume knob missing …

played a C minor scale (the only one I know) … could hear it was pretty detuned … the more you pressed the keys randomly, the more each key changed its sounds seemingly arbitrarily and in a random fashion …

other knobs didnt crackle , exept one …

cant tell about the patch functions because I know jack shit about that …

this thing really was a beauty and soooo full of charme …

anyways. … I had him down to 425 Euro …

looking for a new best friend for the CV function on the A4 … told myself to never go down the endless patchable hole …

what do you think?

Ha, sounds like my friend/bandmate’s ms10. It could probably be fixed up, but might be expensive… then again maybe it’s as easy as just re-soldering some dry joints and spraying some contact cleaner in the knobs.

I actually kinda liked the sound of my friend’s beaten up ms10, well, until it failed completely!
I’d probably buy it, but just because failure is what I like best about analog synths, haha

yeah thats too much, tell him he’s dreamin’. i dont know about prices where you are but a nice condition ms10 is about $800 (us) here. basically if it doesn’t track properly you are looking at a recap and contact clean session that would put you back $300 or there abouts and probably take a long time to find someone to do it for you. The ms10 filter has one of the dirtiest deepest bass sound available but it’s not the most useful synth generally. just think, one day if you want to sell it again it’s going to be difficult!

the link to the thread with fifth voice for A4, always gives me a headache! … always … it is like, I gotta spend 3 holidays worth of money and start the rabbit hole modular, fuck I only live once, who the fuck am I kidding, I am never even making money with my music, I already have too much gear, I need all the gear in the world, sort of over pressure in my head, tooooo many thoughts for 1 simple decision … the 5th voice for the a4 …

i bet selling the aforementioned ms10 would be a nightmare, fixing it would be a black hole for money … better hands off! … feel better now! …

still question remains … why do I think I have to use the cv option on the a4 …

I wouldnt write of modular - there are good clones of the ms10/20 filters available (or even filters with the 20’s resonance circuit patched onto another filter) and can be built over time, also if any part does eventually die a horrible beer-spilling death can just pop It out and replace, sell the original spares or repairs. Patching is definitely fun in modular, not a chore - dont be intimidated, maybe see if you cant find someone to let you have a go on theirs.

Btw a microbrute is a genuinely great little synth, astonishingly good for the money and well worth it.

Yeah, I second the microbrute. At times it doesn’t even sound analog, and can be very harsh/industrial, but it can also produce very lush tones. Plus, the onboard sequencer is nice when advanced by an external gate signal, especially if the gate pattern is a different length to the sequence on the brute. I’ve had a lot of fun cranking out some pseudo-generative sequences using it with a Beatstep, so I’d say the A4 would be even better as a controller!
