Korg Modwave

The FLIP operator is the secret weapon for through zero PWM sounds.

This was transcribed from Darth Vader, my lab mascot, because it is “All too Easy”

He says:

a) From an INIT patch on Osc 1:BASIC 1 wavetable at POS=0 select the sawtooth wave, set the volume to 42 (the answer to the Universe and Everything)
b) Osc2: Basic 1 wavetable at POS=0 select the sawtooth wave, set the volume to 42
c) Set Osc2 operator to FLIP, Morph=0, this inverts the waveform 180 degrees and if all is right, you should hear absolutely nothing.
d)Modulate the phase on Osc2 with an LFO at an appropriate rate and you should here through zero PWM.
Set to 180 degrees displacement.
e)watch it on the waveform monitor to confirm
f)all other goodies to make a patch (adjust DO levels and modifiers to taste)
g)No carbon freezing was used for this tutorial

So now with an SE Regular and Platinum for both the Wavestate and OPSIX, will the Modwave be any different ?

The differences between the regular model and the SEs for the other two are not the same, so i wonder what the Modwave SE will have extra ?

Maybe in a week.

Are people jumping in to sell their model ones ?

Too bad they didn’t revive the M3 Korg Komponent System. A 73-key keybed with a flip up rack that could hold an OPSIX module, Wavestate module and Modwave module would be amazing.

99% chance Modwave SE will be released and look like the little Modwave plunked into a bigger keyboard, have aftertouch, have more polyphony, be priced like its SE siblings, etc.

I was just corrected by Dan (Korg I think) - Korg R&D in California works on the Wavestate and Modwave, but the Opsix is done by Korg Japan.

Thinking of snagging a cheapo modwave. Hesitate because the build quality of wavestate and opsix felt like an insult (the synth version of fast food?). Also the screen and menu diving was a huge headache. I am intrigued though because of the kaoss pad, subtractive synth, big ass sample library and what seems like it could be slightly improved ui.

Any thoughts from folks who have played with one? I seem to only hear pads on YouTube from the usual demoers. I am hoping to get something more ragged and skronky

I must admit if you edit from the front panel I find I have to DEOXIT the value knob every 2 weeks or so.
However the mod matrix is wonderful and rivals and in some way surpasses the Waldorf Blofeld.
The Modwave is fully compatible with SERUM wavetables that can be homemade with WAVEEDIT for Modwave or Audioterm.

To me it is a toss-up on what I like more, the Modwave or the Blofeld.

The build quality is identical to the other 2. In use it is very similar to the wavestate. I owned both the ws and the mw for a bit and the save structure was just kind of a nightmare on both. The modwave is a little more straightforward to program and very deep in its own right but starting anything from an Init state just kind of sucks imo.

You can set up as many custom INIT files as you wish on the Modwave.
Not just limited to the factory INIT.

In patch programming do you work mostly from the app? And do you use the modwave as a module in performance or play it from the keys?

I work from the front panel of the Modwave hardware only.
I have tried the editor, but as my Modwave keybed is 6 feet away from the computer,
it is not convenient or possible to use, as unless you are on the page with the virtual keyboard
you can not play the keys except from the keybed that is too far away to reach.

I guess Korg assumes you will have the hardware in easy reach of the computer-wrong.

I have no DAW, no sequencer, so everything is MIDI clocked to the TT-78 and played live ala 1977.
