I think the UI problem also stems from the OASYS, which had a bigger screen. Some menus are easy to use, eg set lists, effects, Karma, control surface, most of the synth engines, sequencer, etc., while many others are cumbersome. UI is a common issue with workstations.

Kind-of amazed that there are no good editors out there (apart from the AL1 editor mentioned further up this thread), since there must be an absolute ton of Kronos units out there there. The official Korg editor, is very clunky.

Well, not to be tacky, but from my recollection that is sort of grading on a curve. I had to learn how to interact with my Kronos 2 to get it to take touch panel input consistently.

Loved the idea of the setlist but I had some panicked moments trying to get it to change patches there!

**Austrian Piano, Italian Piano, etc., which are not included in early models, can be used by purchasing Sound Libraries.

According to the Korg web shop, CX-3 signature sound packs and Best of Triton are free to download. Pro Splits and Layers is 19 USD and Ensemble Combinations costs 49 USD. Italian F piano can be acquired for 199 USD. For the latter it is best to wait until Black Friday, when it usually runs in the region of 125 USD.

My guess is that the new sound pack might become available for something like 50 USD to earlier Kronos users. However, I don’t think this will include the additional already existing sound packs which cost roughly 267 USD. We shall see when the time comes.

These guys timed the bootup time - 48 sec. which might be a bit faster than my Korg M3

If/when my keyboard playing skills improve to that point that I get invited to play keyboard with other people, Kronos will be on the short list of stage keyboards. Crazy that a 61 or even 73 Kronos might actually cost less now than the equivalent Nord.

Luke from Korg demos the EP Early a bit, one or two of the new artist signature patches, and a few other sounds updated for the 2025 Kronos. He also shows off some keyboard drumming skills.

Kronos 73 is now $3699 at most online stores - so higher than the preorder price posted back in Jan. but still lower than the competing Montage M7, Roland V-Stage 76 and Nord Stage 4 (any version)

That’s an amazing price compared to 2011, when it was pretty much the same. Bought my Kronos for 3000 eur back then, and paid another few hundreds for the SSD expansion kit including Berlin piano a couple of years later.

Yes, the price makes it a compelling alternative to the V-Stage and Nord Stage. It sounds like it has the acoustic and electric pianos, and the organs to compete with them.

I’d like to lay hands on one to get a better idea of what it’s like to browse presets, and how quickly typical effect settings - like phaser rate and amount for Rhodes type presets - can be accessed.

Browsing presets is great: you can search by category, words, etc and favorite your favorites. EP controls including effects pedals are nicely accessible in particular if you use an expression pedal and the on-board switches. If you want immediacy of interface though, Nord Stage 4 Compact may be the smarter choice.

If I had to choose today, I’d probably go for the Nord Stage 4 Compact because it would have all I’d ever need. Plus, I could use those 12 additional keys. But, in a cover band, Kronos will be the better choice because synth wise it is by far more versatile and flexible and that set list feature is incredibly useful.

Luckily our local shop carries the Kronos, Nord Stage, Roland V-Stage, and probably any other likely competitor.

V-Stage looks to have more flexibility in split point settings than the Nord Stage and costs almost 1/2 of the Nord.

But Kronos is even more affordable, relatively speaking. I’ll have to look further into the set list functionality.

It will be fun to explore each of them and figure out which is the closest fit for what I would like to do. It could be that I remain a play at home only keyboard player in which case I won’t need any of them. Time will tell.

In terms of split points, Kronos’s combination mode allows you to go far beyond: simple splitting, layering with overlapping zones, velocity sensitive layers, fading parts in and out via pedal or the on-board faders, etc. - thanks to its truly massive polyphony.

Still today though, after roughly 30 years, no workstation can beat VAST when it comes to splitting and layering.

Sounds like Korg’s implementation is even fancier but Iayers, overlapping zones and cross fades, layers switches, and some other fancy stuff is also possible on the Nord Stage 4.

Yes, the 11 split points for the 4 possible zones are specified a priori. My Stage 4 compact is not on the very latest version of the firmware, but a quick look at the manual suggests that constraint still applies (see p 38):

I have yet to lay hands on a Kronos - any of the iterations - so I don’t know which presets he plays are new to the latest iteration, other than the EP Early

I think he plays mostly new presets.

Some visibly use third party samples (KApro, etc). I wonder whether or not this was what they meant by “curated programs from the Kronos Sound Libraries”. To be seen whether this curated sample set could then be purchased by non-Kronos 3 users. I speculate that they will do so because they can make easy money this way, both with the existing Kronos/Nautilus user base and via a port to the Korg Module soft synth.

Other presets rely on modeling only, eg str1, ms20, poly6, etc. so they can be easily imported into older Kronos synths. If/Once they release their OS update for older Kronos series, then EP Early will also be available to those. Fingers crossed.

EDIT: I have just checked the available Tine models on my Kronos OS version 3.x. It does have Tine I but there are no early and late varieties. So voilà, it will be a tiny update in this regard.
