Korg KAOSS PAD KPV

My first pieces of gear were the kaossilator and the KP3. They changed my life. I sold the KP3 this year, but I’m definitely tempted by this one, if nothing else but for nostalgia and appreciation of the KP3.

I used to use my KP3 (and later my KP3+) as a looper. Digitakt (and Digitone) on the right, KP3 on the left, and a battle mixer in between. Fantastic and fast! Dream team. Mixing patterns like with vinyl is just fun.
Unfortunately, the looper always runs out of sync. Korg never managed to fix that. That’s why my KP3 was eventually replaced by an Octatrack. Obviously, it’s way better and can do a lot more, but it wasn’t cheap. If it’s just about looping, it’s probably a bit underchallenging.

Let’s hope the KP3V doesn’t have any sync issues.

What I don’t understand:
Can you tell me why there’s still no video showing just the effects?
The reverb on the KP3 is a bit outdated, and I’m very interested to know whether Korg has improved the sound here.

Have you had a chance to check out the AlphaTheta RMX-Ignite yet?
I think it’s a bit silly, but I’m sure it’ll find its buyers.

Over these 15 years the strategy of Korg looks the same. They really love small incremental steps and never release something that is clearly replaces the previous version.

It’s a frustrating bug, especially when resampling!

If it’s just simple looping on the KP3, I find it’s better to turn off MIDI clock. Just set the BPM correctly and the loop will be perfect.

When you use it like that, it doesn’t really matter where the 1 is, the loop will be the right length and it’ll stay in time.

You can also nudge the tempo, and set the 1 manually by holding shift and pressing the Align button.

Yep, I really hope they’ve sorted it this time!

It’s such a fun and powerful tool for very quick sampling/resampling/mangling.

The real problem for me when syncing loops was with external sequencers and their midi clock, it’s a train crash in 5 minutes.

If they fix this then I’m really glad they redone this form factor.

Liking this guys jam at the end

I was kind of interested in the KPV. And then I realized, it would be easy to find a used MPC One or One+ for less (or a new one for $50 more), and use it along with my MPC Live 3 as a dedicated effects box running XY FX.

Anyone know where the manual can be found please?

I’ve checked here:

https://www.korg.com/us/support/download/product/0/1009/

But it’s not there, not the full manual anyway.

Also, is it true that it can take voice input and output it as MIDI, in real-time?

If so, and it works well, that’s a really useful addition. It’s a bit early to tell, I’ll wait for some real feedback from users… but I reckon this could be well worth it.

Why does he always that have 1,000 yard stare in his eyes? I think his vids are some of the best tho.

I have a KP3+ and like some of you have mentioned it doesn’t sync properly to ext midi clock. Not terrible for the time-based fx because the slip is small but when looping samples it’s just not usable unless you use the KP3+ as the master clock (which is often what I do).

If this one bug is fixed I’ll probably get one but will definitely be waiting for 2nd hand prices! List price is definitely too high in my view.

The other thing that always bugged me was the fx depth as a knob. And being so close to the input gain knob means I can easily move it it unintentionally.

I like to slam an fx in and out with a fader and it would be much nicer if one could have fx depth on the fader imho.

Just watched loopops review - I didn’t notice him mention if it syncs well to external midi. (could have missed it tho cos a I’m bit baked!).

Has anyone who’s got one tested that aspect yet?

I love the kaoss flavours in my full setup with midi sync from DAW or Force via my MioXL for quick live looping for transitions. It’s awkward having to clock from the KP3+ since the Force doesn’t like ext midi clock either.

Looking forward to hearing your results!

It looks like various documents have been published, including the manual and the MIDI implementation.

The MIDI implementation is quite detailed, and it seems possible to change parameters via SysEx — even the LED matrix.
There’s also documentation on the structure of user programs.

Based on this, it should be feasible to build an editor.
Ideally, this is something KORG should be doing, but the currently available editor only covers samples and global settings, and doesn’t allow any effect editing.

Has anyone got their unit yet? Any thoughts on it?

Maybe you tried this already, but if not, give it a try.

Turn off MIDI clock altogether. Set the BPM correctly, sync the 1s by holding shift and tapping ‘Align’.

Then loops will stay in time much better. It doesn’t matter whether the KP3 has its loop start point exactly in the right place, if the BPM is correct the loop will be the right length and doesn’t drift much.

Also you can re-correct by aligning the 1s again as described above.

there is an editor … made by korg.
or it might just be a librarian tool…
