KORG Acoustic Synthesis Phase8

Sure, a p-6 will do completely different things with the samples that this can’t, and depending of the goal will be the better option. Tbh for this price it’s not even a question to take a Digitakt (1, but even a 2) over this.

I’d only suggest this to people that a) have a filled studio with obvious missing pieces, b) have the disposable income and c) actually know what they expect from this and how they’d use this. From the influencers the closest I could see is heinbach.

I’m also curious how many aspects of the sound you really can impact. Imho there should be some variances with modulating the magnet, dampening the tines, putting stuff on them for resonance, overdriving the signal from the pickups, just not sure how much of the possibilities are actually implemented.

The biggest limitation I see being a problem is the reach, the deeper register seems to be out of reach due to physics (thimes would need to be to long).

Sure, but that’s also already really heady.
Assuming somebody does it and sells it as a preset, but damn that’s a high price. (Then again, the box is about halfway there…)

Yeah, the physicality is again the same argument why hardware instead of software.
Music making is a physical process for so many.

They said it can fm somewhere in the interviews… I’m curious what that will sound like. I think a lot of what this can do will be in software and is just not ready.

It was in the context that there is a rate knob for the triggering.
You can switch between hold and retrig, and the retriggering seemingly goes high enough that it’s kind of fm-y. Don’t think there’s much happening in software, that would go against the idea of it being physically synthesized.

I still think korg should have gone bigger with this like a few octaves of tines… would have been cool to see them swinging for something that someone would consider making their primary instrument. Part of me can’t help but think that if I got one of these it would end up in like 1 or 2 tracks and then just become a really cool desk toy. Not that I would have run out and bought the 4000$ version of this I imagined and I might even buy this one still, but it would have been exciting to see them release something that really swung for the fences.

I’m really curious what all the ports are.
I’m counting 11.
Guessing:
Power, line out, phones out,

Midi in, midi out, midi through, sync in, sync out.

That leaves 3.
Potential: CV in, trig in, mod in.
Alternatively it has a stereo out.

Or it does not have midi through and out but more CV ins.

Well see.

Watching the comments on this video, I get the feeling that once Phase8 is released, people are just going to run its sound through something like a Microcosm pedal and completely mess it up…

I think this is easily the most exciting thing Korg has done in a very long time and I hope this inspires the larger manufacturers to take more risks (although the success of this will be the real deciding factor).

That said, I’ve no idea how I’d use this. Would I get bored of the perceived limitations or would it encourage experimentation outside of my comfort zone? Jury’s out, but Dave Mech gave a great show of utilizing the Phase8 in an unexpected way, for sure. I look forward to, at the very least, playing with it someday.

I’m just happy to see Tats and team bring it to life. I hope it’s a success because I look forward to what else Korg Berlin might have up their sleeves.

Interesting, David’s utilisation was my first thought, reminds me of a pantha du prince concert, where he moved stuff around in a bowl while a mice was picking it up.

Acoustic textures always fit well in ambient, but also in specific styles of techno, and that this can be so tightly sequenced makes it ideal for techno.

I’m more interested what the use is outside of those 2 genres.

(Not to play down the performance, it’s great)

Yeah, I curious to see what other genres people use this for. To me it gives me a Tom Waits kinda vibe. And I’m all for it.

OK! This demo is the best yet and shows all sorts of potential. Still want to hear more melodic things from it but this sounds interesting in points and I love how it seems to have enough features to be standalone. Imagining this with a vocalist.

Kinda annoying they seem to be trying hard not to mention a mbira / kalimba in the usual ‘hey we’ve made something new that wasn’t at all inspired by something that’s been played in Africa for 3000 years’ way.

Surprised they didn’t add a mini kaoss pad to it. It seems they discontinued the minis but they still have the nu:tekt. I would demo the thing with a kaoss next to it, which would add quite some variation

This thing has an hypnotic vibe and the ability to get you in trance just like djembes do.

I have a bad feeling that Andre 3000 is going to make a really divisive free jazz album with the Korg Phase 8

I really don’t understand why with such a simple eight step sequencer, plus the limitations of these chimes, they would add automation which seems great but no tell way to chain sequences? So what’s the point of automation if your always stuck in these tiny eight step loops nomatter how much automation it sounds boring after a couple times playing… it seems really cool but it would be great to use automation to make longer interesting sounding loops… idk maybe I’m just crazy but I don’t get it…

So maybe we’ll see a phase 8 SE in the future with proper 4 octave keybed…. Something akin to a Rhodes or Wurlitzer…

Can’t wait for the phase 8 native !

Joke aside, interested since the early prototype but hardly blown away by what I see and hear…

When they showed the first prototype I thought for sure that’s where the concept was headed, but the end product doesn’t look much different from the initial prototype from what 3 years ago?
