Koala Sampler App

I just realized you can drag and drop from Apple’s built-in Voice Memos app into a Koala pad.

What! I never knew that. From voice memos? I can’t seem to get that to work.

Drag it from the list of recordings in the sidebar, not the waveform display.

Though I would resurrect this thread, as I find myself using Koala more and more, especially when traveling. It’s quite liberating just being able to use your phone to make quite good sounding results on the go, or on the couch, all with a satisfying feel, touchscreen considered.

Despite that, I have two(ish) feature requests that would really make this the goat app for me:

  • fully featured envelope per pad
  • triggered/synchronized recording, with the ability to set recording length in steps/bars
  • bonus: retain pad settings when using auto-chop (this includes color, EQ and mix settings)

What are yours?

Completely agree!

I’d add, some LFOs for modulation.

I like Koala… it’s just bordering on too simple for me. Three or four more key features could take it too a much higher level, without overcomplicating it.

system wide LFOs would indeed be great as well, or even other modulation options like an eFolower. But I would start with pad envelopes for sure. There is a few LFO possibilities within the mixer FX.

I sold almost all of my other gear and am only using an iPad mini with koala and all in app purchases most of the time now. Really quick to get something going with so many sample sources (packs from file system, live recordings, field recordings from phone, sampling from the web …).
The app being so simple takes away a lot of choice paralysis, and some of the limitations like only 4 mixer tracks make me try unusual stuff which can lead to fun results.

Finish up most of my tracks in ableton after recording a live performance straight from koala.

Agree with your suggestions for the most part though, but I’d rather have the app be too simple than too complex.

Totally love Koala. Such a great App with a very great pricing policy. there a three things I would love to be added though:

  • creating midi events from sample slices (like you have in MPC or Ableton)
  • being able to change the color scheme/theme because I am not really fond of the red/pink and blue
  • choose track colors

You have pad colors now, but i would love for them to translate to the sequencer

I prefer a dedicated tactile interface (no dongles/cable spaghetti) so i probably won’t ever use koala as a main device. Of course, on the go, it’s unmatched.

However it’s still one of my most used apps (on the go or not) for prepping samples, specifically cropping long samples to just parts I’ll use and for stem separation. Also helpful to type out names of samples which is always tedious on hardware.

If i could request 1 feature it would be a way to apply swing (and choose between 8th or 16th resolution ideally) to specific sounds vs just a global setting

Hi guys, does koala sampler allow quickly resampling external audio (from digitone for example) when used as an auv3? Or would you need to record the audio into the DAW and then drop the recorded ample into koala from a folder?

Direct sampling !

Is this on the Mac, or on an iPad/iPhone? The answer is yes in both cases but setup can be a little different depending on the setup
