How about the MFB Urzwerg? Pretty affordable second hand!

You can actually step sequence with the MPC X 16 knobs as step velocity, but only per note. So you would need to select new pads and step sequence those notes for melodies.

I have one and it’s great fun - like 2x souped-up SQ-1s with a lot more control (but still no patch saving, by the way, should that be a thing of interest).

If you want midi, get the Urzwerg Pro! The OG Urzwerg only has CV/Gate outs.

Doepfer Maq 16/3 seems to be a dream…Each of the three rows can send control voltage and over midi can control stuff like pitch, gate length, velocity, pitch bend aftertrouch and midi cc, program change - so I could set pitch with the upper row, gate length with the middle row and velocity with the lower row, fiddling with the knobs until happy and then switch to controlling filter cutoff, modulation etc.

That´s how I always wanted to work on a sequencer! :cb: Damn…of course I find out about that thing when it´s already discontinued…

I have the Pro, but the first version of Urzwerg does have midi, for what it’s worth - even thru! See pix here:

I’m just here to laugh at the word “knob”.

Ha!

Knob.

The knob, berlin school seq of my dreams
Edit: i reread a review and people like it but also miss scales (still, after updates) in a product with that price.
So only for people that dont want/like scales.
Erica seq also nice, but with screen…

On the other hand, its not forbidden to hold a step on an elektron and change the note ( or other value with a4cv for example) by ear by turning the knob…

Midi on the Urzwerg is only for start/stop and midi clock, though (Unless there was an update, cant´t find anything, tho).

Btw the Intellijel intellijel Metropolis/Metropolix might also be interesting! The concept with the stages is great, imho.

Behringer 960 or Behringer 182 perhaps?

Looking at the Urzwerg manual it mentions using a keyboard to transpose step notes, for instance, but it’s not clear if it sends note data - the Pro manual specifically says

Using MIDI, the unit allows creating polyphonic sequences with up
to four voices.

and

you may connect a synthesizer to MIDI Out.

I’ve only ever used the Pro, so cannot confirm either way. If it is the case, then I’m doubly glad I have the Pro!

From my memory and from what I read in reviews as well as reading the specs, it seems the Urzwerg does not transmit note data. Also sequencer midi output is listed as a new feature for the Urzwerg Pro.

The Urzwerg Pro is an extended version of the company’s Urzwerg step sequencer. The new version offers output of MIDI-notes and -controllers as well as 32 individual step LEDs to keep track of the sequences’ status

On the Urzwerg midi seems indeed to be limited to:

can be synchronized to midi-sequencers, urzwerg can send and receive midi-start/stop commands as well as midi-clock. furthermore, urzwerg´s sequences can be transposed, advanced stepwise as well as its steps being directly addressed using a midi-keyboard or daw

Maybe someone who owns/owned the Urzwerg can confirm.

For more complex, but still “knobby” sequencers, the Ucapps Midibox Seq V4 - diy only, but can be found second hand from time to time - and the Sequentix Cirklon come to mind.

I got to play about with a friend’s DIY Klee eurorack sequencer, and it’s astonishing fun - not knobby so much as switchy and slidey, but incredibly powerful and hands-on.

Erica Synths Black Sequencer looks super intuitive.

Five 12 vector looks like a dreamn sequencer to me

That’s because I’ve seen this thread just now! :grinning:

Although my Dark Time is currently on the shelf.

Had a Oberkorn from Analogue Solutions sequencer and was great

The one and only GRP R24 (if you have some cash to throw)

They crop up every now and then, but they don’t last long…

The midibox v4 has a few mentions here. Anyone actually have one and use it?
Ive been debating takin the plunge and building one, but its not sure if it gonna fall in that category of “yay i built it…awesome! but i don’t like it, so now what?”
