Killer: Octatrack AED, the ease and speed of slicing, trimming, fades etc. I find it even quicker than using a computer editor. Has one PITA though, horizontal zoom level is not remembered when changing slice/sample, though strangely vertical is remembered.
Killer: Deluge grid/arranger a real fast and quick way of entering data, and very logical. Feels like play.
Killer: Rytm MKII/Digitakt sampling. By far the fastest sampling I have used, simple efficient, great for batch sampling.
Killer: Squarp Pyramid grid edit. Easily and simply move a note or notes, rotate a note or sequence of notes, draw automation with touchpad, and using definitions easily and quickly drill down to target note or parameter.
PITA: Octatrack initial project setup. Loading samples into a new project is pretty tedious, no facility to check a bunch of files and load them like on Rytm/DT. Also changing machine type should jump to relevant slot list on yes rather than having to press right arrow after choosing static/flex, it is an unnecessary step.
PITA: Digitakt mutes. I liked the idea of pattern and global mutes, but hated that there was too many flashing LEDs making it unusable for my eyes, I think if it had either dedicated mute buttons or if the mute state was indicated on the screen instead of the trig buttons I might have kept it.
I daresay I’ll write some more later, but that’ll do for now.
Killer:
Octatrack - scenes
Octatrack - randomize slices
Octatrack - simultaneous sampling plus playback
Octatrack - any track can load/share any recording buffer
Octatrack - Arranger
Digitone/A4 - randomize page (would be even better, if you could randomize singe parameters, by clicking the respective encoder and pressing yes)
Digitone/Digitakt - controll all
Digitakt- lfo to sample slots
OPZ - punch in effects
OPZ - step components
OPZ - mute groups
Elastic drums ios - parameter automation/randomization
Brambos Apps ios - randomization/pattern generation
Patterning ios- THE sequencer
Pure Acid ios - the bassline sequencer/pattern generation options
As you see, I‘m a huge fan of randomization and auto pattern generation if they are well implemented. They can be a source of inspiration, spark for creativity like a great sample can be. When I get a nice result that triggers ideas, I just adjust it to taste. Many ios apps have implemented these in a great way. They can often initiate a nice track.
Elektron did a great job implementing randomization of parameter pages. They should include similar features on a pattern level.
When I think of killer features, the OT comes to mind most often. Followed by the OPz. The design of the OPz is genius imo, it just has two major flaws unfortunately. Sound and build quality
PITA:
That tiny little tool icon to open a VST/AU plugin’s GUI in Ableton.
Wish it were bigger. Wish they were above the channels, in a row representing the plugin chain.
Killer:
Dsi evolver can assign bpm division as a modulation destination. Assigned it on accident the first time, total brain melter.
Korg esx motion sequencing sample start/ end points. I know lots of gear will do that now but it was a real revelation to me at the time.
PITA:
Countless pieces of old gear that required stopping the sequencer in order to save a pattern.
