Hi Shigginpit, isn’t it always the way but I brought the octatrack just before I was going away to wales for 4 days
I’m back home tomorrow so I’m going to do battle with the compact flash card and usb mode
I’ve been kindly given a copy of the factory content which I’m going to try and get onto the flash card
I’ve got a card reader and watched and read loads of info on usb mode and going to try various options given from putting some trs cables in outputs to stop grounding in usb mode
Also appears to make difference in what order you turn on octatrack and laptop
Also appears you can use iPhone and also android tablets to get compact flash card recognised so I’m trial and error will get me there 
I will definitely let you all know, what I did to get it all set up
Once again I can’t express how helpful kind and friendly you have all been on this forum

Firstly thanks for everyone’s input
So I tried an m1 MacBook Pro and an old intel MacBook running os Mojave that I keep for using with my access virus control centre software
Both failed to recognise octatrack flash card in usb mode
I spent a good hour trying various combinations of starting octatrack first with and without usb cable plugged in and starting laptops first then switching on octatrack with and without usb cable plugged in.
Connected audio and outs to my mixer as one thread on previous forum post mentioned a grounding issue in usb mode
When I unplugged the usb cable the octatrack recognised the usb cable has been unplugged
Anyway despite all this
Not a sausage
absolutely
no sign of octatrack flash card on either laptop:weary:
So with misgivings decided to pull out compact flash card from octatrack and just use my card reader
I added a Soundgas sample pack and a copy of the octatrack factory content via my iPhone and android tablet onto the flash card using the card reader and I finally have some sounds on my octatrack.
I think I might have not got the file structure correct on the flash card and dropped sound files twice in 2 different places on card as was completely frustrated after spending 90 mins arsing about with laptops cables wires devices etc
I might need to tidy up the flash card once I know how to add samples in correct folders
I remember being prompted to create a set
but I didn’t know how to name it as I wanted so I think it’s got a random date instead of a name
then I’m sure it automatically created a project
Anyway my journey starts
I’m 99% sure that I’m going to keep this octatrack despite the flash card eject button being inside device as could have fell off in transit
I guess I now need to quickly check as many button inputs/outputs work as window to return octatrack to seller ends in 5 days

Seriously take it to a camera repair shop. They repair any type of CF readers. They can repair it in no time.
If you can’t get samples onto it via a USB cable, I think returning it is the right choice.
i’d agree, send the device back. For one particular reason. The broken off eject button tells the prior ownership did not take care much of the most vulnerable electronics sticking out all the time, hence likely dragged it ouf a bag and ripped the button off but with such force that it is safe to assume the pins inside the CF card slot are not prestine anymore - which would explain why you can’t make proper connections. So either fully checking the pins or rather the complete CF unit or returning it.

You may have already tried this, but you mention that you formatted FAT32 with your MacBook, i have noticed some issues when doing this from macOS. I would try formatting the card from the OT itself instead…

I’m convinced I tried that option as well and it made no difference
I’m not technically proficient but I suspect the usb socket is defective , I’m not sure how to test it outside of using the usb mode on the device as that just doesn’t work with different laptops , usb cables etc
But I’m managing by carefully pulling out compact flash card when I want to add purchased samples
And using a card reader to do what I want
It’s frustrating but nothing I can do as seller denied any issues
One of those things and it is an old device mk1 so not stressing too much

I admire your positive attitude, but if you bought on ebay then it doesn’t matter what the seller says, open a return and give reason ‘item not as describer’ and eBay should take care of you.
mate just had the same experince in terms of purchasing what i thought was a good value ot mk1 - it arrives tomorrow and fingers crossed tis all ok - if you can get a repair quote and a partial refund to cover it as long as everyting else works its a good price

it arrived and seems ok maybe a touch of screen fade but it could ne the angle or my eyesight - but all in all very lightly used no brown staiuning on the encoders and no scratches anywhere excpet the base

it seems that i have comeplety forgotten how to use the bloody thing - so i can’t rememebr how to laod samples - anyway i remebered how to make static noise from the filters and prtu them through neighbour tracks to mnake em sound like music with the trigs and then i rmemebred scenes so i will get there eventually - ok i rmemeebr about samples now and its fucking endless madness from here on in
