JoMoX Alpha Base Analog Drum Synthesizer

I know, but can you load MULTIPLE wav files into flash rom at once?

Good question, I’m not sure I just brute forced through the 40 files I needed to do. Not ideal for sure.

not if you want to load a lot of files or even the complete file space.

To load multiple samples at once, as mentioned above, there are two methods:

via ā€œCHANGE AND OPEN FOLDERā€ which does not work for me, since my AB recognizes my custom wav files as single files, but does not recognize folders on my SD card

or

via the ā€œFACTORY RESETā€ folder method inl the BIN files, but for this you have to convert your wav to raw. I tried this method with wav files but i made the AB freeze 2x.

I had more success manually sampling into the alpha base. Its not a machine where i want to load tons of samples into it though. Some chords and vocal stabs went a long way for me.

It’s great how much levels, envelopes etc interact, almost like on a compressor or complex gate. You turn down a track and it sounds more gated, you set different shuffles for different tracks and you hear different parts of a sample … things like that make the AB come very alive;)

BasRaw.7z (2.0 MB)
BasWave.7z (2.0 MB)
Try with these… same samples just diff format. Follow the spec for samples and they should be max. 1.3 sec long.
Unzip and place the folders in the root of your SD card. One of them shoud work. Follow the instructions in the manual on how to format the card first and how to upload a folder to your AB. It works for me. I can’t help you beyond what’s been said in the manual.
P.s. i named/numbered the samples to match sample slots’ numbers on AB. Wasn’t necessary, probably… but just in case.

@ mk2 users - I’m thinking of getting a used mk2 in a trade deal and wondered if people could detail the known faults/bugs with the mk2’s/problems you’ve come up with.

I’ve seen there have been some firmware and scanner updates since launch to account for encoder response.

Anything else?

And tips for how to check a second hand unit for any obvious problems would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice!

Following up on my last post. I really can’t figure out the membrane accent. When I set an accent, the step plays the accented note as well as the following one at a louder volume. It always needs an extra unaccented step to reset to normal volume. (i.e. three accented notes with one accent will play two accented notes. Two notes with one accent will both play accented.)

Could someone else test the accent behavior on the membrane channel? I’m trying to figure out if it’s an alpha base quirk, or an issue with my unit, and I can’t find any demo videos that specifically use accents on the membrane channel.

I have the same issue with accents on MBrane track. Accents plays few steps before (or later, I don’t remember) than they are set in the sequencer. It seems just like a bug for me. Moreover I had a problem with predefined scenes in MBrane engine since the recent purchase of AB – they sound broken/very distorted. I updated firmware and the problem dissapeared but on the next day it appeared again. Could you please check this on your devices? But be careful and save kit before switching the scenes on.

Thanks, that’s good to know. Maybe I’ll try to email Jomox and see if they can provide any insight about fixing this.

My MBrane scenes work as expected. Never noticed a problem with them. It would be nice if the scenes didn’t reset the volume though.

Just checked the MBrane accent behavior on my MK1. Everything plays as it should.

MBrane scenes work fine as well, can’t hear any unexpected distortion.

Bummed, but not surprised about the accents. Guess I’ll be exchanging it.

Are you exchanging it for another AlphaBase?

Yep! That’s the plan. I’m guessing it’s a QC issue if it’s not on every unit.

I was confused because I thought another MK2 owner already confirmed the same issue while an MK1 owner confirmed it did not have the issue.

MBrane accents work fine on my MK2.

I did notice on the init kit - the accent setting was very high and the volume was very low. This meant accent hits were ā€œloudā€ and non-accented ones were almost inaudible. If i set accent to 32 and volume to 60 the accented/non-accented notes all played as i expected.

Was messing with sequencing this machine externally and while its more limited, i prefer tweaking the machine on its own. plus the swing is so good on its sequencer.

Very satisfying to take a regular drum sound on it and morph into something more groovy and organic just by tweaking the filter, lfo and envelopes.

I also love happy accidents like forgetting I activated reverse sample and finding a totally new sound that fits the groove perfectly.

Maybe ill try external sequencing again but i think my mind has accepted the limits of its sequencer already.

The AB sequencer is great and interact very well with the sound engines (accent and volume with env and filters, Shuffle per track). There is obviously a great groove resulting of this. It is perfect for 4 to the floor music genre IMHO.
When it comes to break beat or other kind of similar style, I think it needs an external sequencing.
