I’m glad to share a new album with you that came out today. ‘Lüften’ is a sonic stroll through the woods. Calm and without hurry. And I hope you’ll enjoy it. It features 6 longform ambient pieces for wandering minds, plus one short track in the very middle.
‘Lüften’ means to let air in and I feel this translates quite well to the music. It is available in a limited cassette edition with fold-out inlay and individual small format photos per tape. Downloads are free (name your price) for two weeks.
This album came together very naturally, without any pressure, which often leads to longer tracks in my case. It also rekindled my love for modular, as aside from a Kalimba and Ukulele as sample fodder, it was entirely made with my Eurorack system and recorded straight to cassette in single takes.
I’d love for you to have a listen.
And while I have your attention, I will release a rather big and complex sound pack very soon. Filled with Ableton Instrument Racks and WAV files. So if you like my sound design work, this might be something to keep an eye out for.
Looking forward to listening to yet another record from you. Always impressive. Man, I wish I knew how you were so prolific! Well, actually I do know: you’re not lazy like me. Congrats again on putting out another one.
As this kinda is my job, I probably have a lot more time to focus on music. So don‘t feel bad if you‘re not producting in the sense of releasing something. As long as you enjoy the time you spend with or around your music, you already succeeded.
Man, I kinda feel like you went in a completely different direction from Danger. Like, maybe Danger is a play set on earth and Lüften is a retreat into the clouds. Is this all a result of the shift in workflow or was this your original intention here? Still very textural, I love the way tape breathes with life. Very great stuff again, Lütfen, continue to impress us
Awesome. That is exactly as intended, so I’m glad it comes across that way.
In general, I try not to make the same album over and over again. In my little sonic cosmos, I cultivated maybe 3 different core sounds that I‘m trying to alternate between. Just to keep things interesting for myself. They all sound like me, of course, but still.
I always put together different sub-setups out of my instruments to force different workflows. But in the end, I always record straight to stereo, etc. And it is not like one combination of instruments is always leading to melodies while the other to more free-floating vibes.
It‘s more of a mood thing. For ‘Lüften’ I simply was in the mood to create something very free and somewhat minimal with my modular system.
Ah great, thank you! So is your workflow heavily sample based? Are your drones and tones samples too? Or are you using VCA’s to slowly loop droning oscillators? Or a mixture? Would love to learn a bit more about your workflow for these long-form one-take pieces. They sound beautiful!
I sampled the Kalimba and a Ukulele into the Squid. All other sounds are analog straight from the oscillators. I don’t habe VCA but many LPGs to fade things in and out.
