I think this really still falls in line with the second part of your take, but I’d argue that depending on what pop tier the artist is in they probably haven’t even picked the producer, or have been given a list of 3 that the label approves of and are influenced in picking a particular name.

I would agree.

I think it’s just the price of selling your soul to the industry in order to be promoted and produced by it.
At the end of the day I see it as a choice they make.

If they want to achieve as much money and fame as possible as fast as possible and they are willing to sacrifice their artistic integrity, that option has been made available for them.

You can see it directly with Taylor Swift

During lockdown she made two indie folk albums with The National that probably sold way less than her usual albums, but she could de it because she wasn’t going to tour etc.

Those are probably the closest to how she would sound if commercial success was less important to her.
