DN2 can do 2-operator FM, no problem.
Just pick algorithm 2 in the FM TONE machine and set the mixer all the way to the left so you only get ‘X’.
If you want feedback on the operator then use ‘Y’.

I’ll reference @Katmat’s comment above - something about the Model:Cycles’ built-in saturation/softclipping/limiting. I don’t really overdrive the thing, but if there’s a built-in limiter of sorts, it’d just be something I have to emulate with the Digitone II.
More curious if the Digitone’s FM Drum sounds closer to the Model:Cycles “Tone” engine than the Digitone’s FM Tone engine. It’s a pretty silly question, I know, but y’all are the experts on this beautiful synth, I figured I’d ask it here

yap. out of all Elektron Boxes I owned the DN2 is the most fun - trying to get a Machinedrum so perhaps the MD will be Top1 in the next months idk

bought the DN2 used for under 800€ just because I wanted a better Behringer Edge Control for some percussive sounds and it’s exactly that and more. it’s synths capabilities are cool but not my cup of tea - if I need a synth I use the VirusTi or Take5 - the controls are better imo - but for percussion and drums, the DN2 really shines

same - had the dt2 and syn last Year…and the dn1 and cycles…the cycles was the most fun for experimental but the DN2 wipes out lives in that area

Did you tweak anything on the reverb? It really shines.
I’d say it’s just Rumsklang reverb, probably around 120 in size and a bit filtered. I don’t remember right now because I recorded that a while back, but I can check the settings when I get home and tell you, if you’re interested

I’m always amazed at the patches you produce with the DN2. I’m convinced almost any synth sound can be done on this machine. It is definitely my primary synth and you continue to inspire me to push my sound design further!

It is true. There are ton of timbres only within the FM machine. The tone changes so drastically even with minor parameter tweak. Too bright? Use the 4-pole filter. It’s such a great machine. Combine it with sequencing, plocking, modulation, and multitimbral capabilities and it’s out of this world capable.
Worth listening to the digitone only thread. You would think there is a digitone sound, but no, almost everyone sounds different.

Yep. I’m constantly amazed by the variety of sounds DN1 can make with just the FM machine. There’s every style out there.
Finding those sounds? That’s another matter…
I recently got one for fun and forced myself to use it for a while. It’s been fun. I’d recommend anybody who’s thinking of getting a DN2 to do the same - it’ll force you to use the FM machine (there’s tons of info online) and you’ll get far more out of the DN2 afterwards.
DN1 prices are pretty stable now so you can sell it later for about the same as you paid for it.
