People who buy things on impulse are making these lists for Reverb used market. The ones who think and research a bit tend to hang onto their equipment longer. This is just an assumption.
Thatās good point.
I would add that the people who make impulse purchases that can influence statistics like this also have a high potential of hoarding the gear they purchase, meaning that there is a high potential that the gear remains unused for long periods of time. That I think is something else to consider when trying to figure out if these stats represent what a keeper should be.
I think itās two things getting mixed up a little.
Firstly, thereās statistics about how many units are being put up for sale in a used market. Thereās surely a couple of factors playing a role here, popularity being one of them besides units being produced, and more. Keep in mind that even here: pop(ular stuff) is not for everyone too
I
Still, itās all nice and easy to put into numbers / statistics.
Secondly, thereās the idea of a ākeeperā. This, on the hand, is a very objective value. The best instrument for one might be a nightmare to use for another.
I, for instance, really adore my Digitone Keys and while Iām somewhat sad to see it being discontinued (well not officially yet), at the same time Iām super happy that it has been produced in the first place. I think second hand prices are really quite low for how much I love it.
That said, I do love my Digitakt just as much and those two (DNK and DT) are probably on either end of a list / statistic like that.
At the end of the day, itās as simple as that:
Something is a keepe once you personally decide so
Never.
Upon further reflection, I have come to the conclusion that Reverb is an indicator of which musicians are desperate to make rent on time.
Think weāve all been there. Itās almost a rite of passage.
Maths is on the list because everyone thinks that itās the first module one should buy. But (1) itās not, and some people realize this, and (2) lots of people get out of modular after buying a case and five modules and then realizing how much more they need to get to do anything that sounds like whatās in their head, and they all bought Maths, and they can sell it to the next person wanting in for the wrong reasons.
Pamās New Workout is on the list because there was an upgrade released this year, Pamās Pro Workout. So a lot of people dumped their PNW at reasonable prices and some of the people mentioned in the paragraph above bought it to put next to their Maths.
the phrase for love or money comes to mind here when considering true motivations.
I think so, but you have to look at what is being heavily discounted, not just what is for sale.
I am keeping my current Octatrack. But it is my fifth one.
Is the Octatrack a keeper?
Who uses Reverb for anything you can find elsewhere, though? Iāll just buy from Perfect Circuit et al.
Absolutely nor true
