Is Old Music Killing New Music?

i mean, i wasn’t every stuck at home with my parents in the way kids have been recently, but I mostly listened to what they did until I was 13 or 14 and even then it was mostly classic rock adjacent to what they liked.

The article is focused on streaming platforms.

As the older demos are coming on to streaming platforms (moving from physical purchases and downloads) in greater numbers, you’ll have more of their tastes reflected in what’s being streamed overall.

Not unexpected that you’d see that kind of a tilt. That might be evened out by less consumption of older music via other platforms. Not sure, from what the author presents.

Regardless, I don’t see data in the report the author links to that supports the contention that, overall, the market (in all platforms) is preferring “older” music (i.e. anything 18 months and older, according to report’s definition) or that older music taking over to a greater extent than before.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. The reporter doesn’t make the case either way.
