(Giving my point of view, some things already said, sorry for repetition)
DT2 is a game changer compared to DT1. Much more RAM, quantized recordings and stereo sufficed for me for the DT1/DT2 move. 3 lfos per track!
(I previously bought DT1 again because of slices update, 2 lfos, very important to me too.)
Now I can recommend DT(2) over OT if you don’t need various fx processing automation, various quantized recordings possibilities (not only DT2’s PLAY quantize), much longer recordings (8m28s vs 66s), manual slices, crossfader/scenes…
Simpler workflow
Much better pitch range

Today I’d also recommend OT MKII over MKI, I had several buttons issues with MKI, 2010.
Much prefer the screen too.
I like the look of the black version, suits ST and DT2…
USB midi/audio is also big plus for me, I use it more and more with iOS. I’m not using Overbridge for now…
I sold OT MKI and DT1 for DT2, (already had OT MKII.)
I will use OT for its strengths I mentioned above…mostly for fx processing with realtime mangling of incoming signal, sampling/resampling with feedback.
Yea, these are all good points. My OTmk1 is still in good shape, so it might be good to sell it now before it starts showing its age. If I don’t like the DG2 I can always return/sell that and upgrade to an OTmkII.
I think I’m leaning towards keeping the OT for now and getting a DT 2 to try out - if I don’t like it I can just return/sell later. My partner reminded me of how many times I said I’d never get rid of my OT
I actually sold one back in 2013-14, and also regretted it, which is why I developed my “never sell the OT” mantra that my partner reminded me of.
I also sold a mint Machinedrum mk2 UW right before they were discontinued and the used price shot up . Realizing now I should change my mantra to “never sell any Elektron gear”
I’m a long time OTmkl user. I never felt the need to upgrade to the mkll until recently when I went to the Brooklyn Synth Expo (shout out to Mario). Everything about the mkll is better it just feels like a luxury item compared to the mkl, plus it’s quicker to navigate because of the extra buttons. Switching from the OT to the DT just feels like a massive change in approach to me. The DT is probably the better option if you are wanting to produce in one box but if you are incorporating other instruments then sticking with the OT is probably the way to go.
I think the octatrack makes sense on its own as well tbh
I much prefer it to the digitakt og I was using
I really like to use the FX and scenes for resampling
I just think it’s hard for anyone to truly answer these questions for someone else as we’re all using these things in such varied ways
OP, I reckon you should just give it a go and see how the digitakt II is for you. If it’s not as good then get another Octatrack or get a DTII and use them together for a bit to compare.
DTII is definitely a blast and everything I hoped for. I’m using it as my main sketch pad, I think I am keeping the OT for improv fun + sound design.
One thing I discovered RE DTII vs OT that anyone else in this predicament should be aware of is that the Retrig parameters are way less flexible in DTII…retrig is more functional and less of a mangling/sound design tool like it is on the OT. At least from my attempts so far
also (as far as I can remember?) OT doesn’t do ascending/descending velocity when retrig’ing, which DT1/2 does. a simple thing but a big pro for the DT, adds a lot of expressivity
I’ve just ordered a digitakt 2. similar line of thinking.
I have a hunch it’s going to suit my workflow better in terms of finishing things. so instead of thinking about it I’ve just ordered to try side by side with my OT MKII. I don’t need both, so will roll with one or the other
interested to see how it goes, it arrives Saturday!
I suspect you will be very happy with your decision!
One of my struggles with the OT was constantly getting stuck into jamming on loops but never getting full songs done. On the DT2, 16 tracks + easy tracking into DAW makes much easier for me to fully flesh things out.
