Is Instagram On Its Way Out?

this forum more social media to me than any „real“ one I use.
On fb I only see advertising. Here I actually communicate with people

But I spend too much time here for sure :upside_down_face:

I abandoned all social media recently, I was just fooling myself since I never got any extra out of it. I always shared my music for free and I am not feeling bad about it but it was a little depressing seeing a post about life have more attention than my music and also realizing most people do not really pay attention  I much love it here

I get on there sometimes. I’ll search for typical gear brands or specific types of gear and then sort by new and watch a few. I still find IG is a good way to find dawless jams or people just making bleeps. Besides that, IG is crap (for me at least) recommended & top stuff is meh. All I see without searching is; People bashing out a lofi 4/4 beat on an sp404, an OP-1 with a house plant, some cassette tape looped around a various object, someone showcasing their modular room, and someone just live looping with an Akai keyboard using Ableton. I respect the artists and their ambitions, dreams, image, etc. But IG just shoves that stuff into my face every time I’d get on there.

Like all social media it’s a tool and you can use it well or bad.
I use Instagram, I like to follow other artists/musicians/producers and listen to their tracks/songs. Sometimes I discover new artists that I like, sometimes I get some inspirations from others.
I get notified when a new tutorial on DT/DN is published on youtube but I try to avoid commercial profiles and I skip sponsored content.
Let’s say that I use Instagram as a sort of mini-youtube…

It really depends on who you’re following (on any social platform). I use IG mainly for graffiti related content or visual art (photographers, painters…), some bad ass dancers too. I don’t really care about musicians on there. Most of the time their content isn’t really relevant to me: selfies, staged photo shootings, food porn, gear porn, buy my single, my merch, tickets for my show (on the other side of the planet) blah blah blah.
As for the sponsored links, it is more the lack of creativity that bugs me off. I liked the “A guy like you: worst sample pack ever” advertising. It was funny and spot on. But sponsored links like this are pretty rare.

I follow less than 5 accounts on Instagram. Two of them are cute cats (Potato the Stumpy Cat and Wildlife with Louis). So when I go there I just see relaxing, cutesy stuff. Nothing to make me upset or bitter,

Twitter seems worse to me than ig in that respect, to the point that I rarely bother with it these days. Not only is it full of sponsored content, but also tweets that were liked by my contacts (I have no idea why anyone would want to see those), so it’s becoming difficult to even see regular tweets from any of my contacts. I also feel that twitter has too many people who are shouting but not listening.

Sponsored content is everywhere unfortunately. Even on stuff like Pinterest that I used to enjoy it turned into an advertising platform and completely ruined it for me. An occasional ad I don’t mind but it was literally every 3rd link (and mostly not even related to any of my interests).

I would prefer a platform that charges for its service and keeps companies, influencers and other people who are way too much into themselves out of my feed. Twitter is the worst of them all IMO, a filter bubble of people who are basically mobbing everyone who’s not sharing their point of view. And this kind of shit is shaping politics and social life these days. Epic mistake.

I mainly use IG for looking at guitars, synths, and selvedge denim - and occasionally a girl I’m dating.

Youtube has become terrible too if you’re not using a script blocker. They need to fire the executive who thought it was a good idea to interrupt a song 3 times with ads. How about a preroll instead, eh? Thanks, I’ll take my 5000 shares of google stock now.

I believe this tells us that the cooked numbers for “views” and “followers” as a business model has about run its course. They wouldn’t be blasting us with constant ads if revenue was as good as claimed.

Instagram was nice for a while before Facebook took it over. It was a reprieve from the toxicity of other platforms and escape just to see pictures and art. Now, it’s just become InstaAd or InstaPromo as that’s practically every other post in my feed. I get that some of it is necessary to sustain the platform, but it’s just gotten over the top at least for me.

I grew up on dial up BBS’s in the Commodore 64 days, so I always have and always will prefer forums over any type of social media.

I think most of the internet is just an advertising platform nowadays.

It’s the beginning of the end for Insta IMO.

But I don’t think it’s the BOtE of social media unfortunately. TikTok is huge amongst the youth, and there will be something that replaces that after I’m sure.

The addiction to constant stimulation means that even as an aware/cautious adult it’s hard enough to put down, but young minds with constant FOMO is a perfect receipe for keeping the young gen on social media of some sort. Needs a societal shift to change but it’s big business and lobbying is a powerful and horrific tool in the wrong hands.

Isn’t all of this the logical end point of all ‘free’ social media? The goal was not to create a platform for sharing and enjoying each other’s content but to become so ubiquitous as to get enough willing eyeballs on advertising targeted at you as possible. Just log out / delete and forget about it. The whole social media game is up.

Alternatively, Isntagram, my fledgling startup manufacturing scales for weighing very, very small amounts of whatever you might like to weigh is going from strength to pharmaceutical-strength…

I deleted all of my social media 4 years ago, aside from LinkedIn. I will never be back. People have asked me, “how do you keep up with people?” If I wanted to hear from someone they’d have my phone number. If you don’t have it, take a hint.

I heard the term, “OK Boomer” is offensive to older people. Curious.

Spot on.

It was useful to know when my favourite bands were touring, but that’s been useless for the last 1.5 years.
Every now and then I get and email suggesting I follow some botox for poodles product. If only I remembered my password, I could botox my poodle.
