iPad Air 1 MIDI out interface

I’d like to output MIDI data from my iPad Air (first model) without using the Mac. What are the options? - working MIDI interfaces; - with/without camera connection kit

I like the cheapest option without having to worry about hanging or missing notes.

Cheap soundcard with midi in/out is also an option. I am aware of the Duet 2, but the dumb lightning cable isn’t always included and costs an arm and a leg.

You don’t care about audio at all? If so, a CCK and a Midisport 2x2 would be a solid choice.

Another option is a iConnectivity MIDI 2+. You’ll have to ask the sellers though if they are including the special lightning cable.

A third option would be to get an older dock like the Alesis IODock. You’d have to look around for one and be sure beforehand it works well with your iPad.

I’ve used all these options to good effect, with iPads around the same era as yours.

Some additional details:

You may want to check that older midisports 2x2s don’t require drivers. I don’t think they do but maybe doublecheck
The original Alesis IODock did not support sysex. The second model did.

With the Apple CCK and it works a treat.

One thing I would say is that in my experience it’s better to get the official Apple CCK rather than any other brands. I had about 3 before I gave up and just got the Apple one never had any problems with the Apple one.

Its true. Calling it out though because it may not be obvious to the OP, and most iPads of the OPs era have almost no battery life

OP is aware of it. But not many small plug n play USB MIDI devices have onboard power that will also charge the iPad. If any. I’ve never seen psu’s on midi interfaces, except on the bigger boys like Unitor

PS: my battery is still pretty good for some unexplainable strange reason

I use wireless midi in my setup. I have a few CME widi dongles in my gear.
