hey peeps
sorry if this has already been discussed… I’m searching hi and lo and can’t figure it out…here goes
I have a nice mixing desk with 2 aux sends and 2 returns
is it possible to use an iPad with a dedicated fx unt like for instance AUFX space… send audio from the mixer send and process it on the iPad and then return the reverberated (or delayed) sound back to the mixer returns?
what would I need? a dedicated iOS audio interface with 2 ins and 2 outs, and then route thru Audiobus?
anybody use an iPad as a dedicated FX processor this way?
yes i think you need an ios compatible audio interface with 2 in 2 out, i think it would make an expensive effect unit compare to other modules, by exemple i use a lexicon mx300, less expensive than an ipad and it works fine!
I’ve played with this on my X-Station, which is pre-iOS and had no complications, audio and midi I/O transmitted over USB (via the CCK) to the iPad, and audio routed in and out of the X-Station and midi synced via standard connections.
I bought and returned the Sonic Port within an hour. Output was really low. It’s really designed to be a guitar interface.
As for great reverb on the iPad, I really like AltiSpace as well.
I got inspired and tested the setup and it works really well. FX send from the mixer and return it to a stereo channel.
As for the low output from the sonic port, this is not anything that I have experienced. I noticed that when running this mentioned FX app I had to manually turn up the output volume on the physical volume buttons on the ipad. But then the output was loud and nice.
hmmm maybe i could hook up my spare mixer as audio interface, it’s an A&H Zed10 which has USB… I already have the camera connection kit… hmmm… must do testing
That should work. I’ve done that with a crappy old Alesis mixer, no issues at all. Use a USB hub and a midi to USB cable and you’ve got audio and midi transmitted from the same connection. As long as everything is class compliant, you should be good.
I use a Griffin Guitar Connect which works incredibly well. You plug the 1/4" mono (made for guitar) plug into your box, and then there is a 1/8" headphone output.
The caveat, and please do reply so others will know, it DOES NOT work with IPAD4. Something about that device causes insane levels of crosstalk, and you’ll get nothing but a feedbacky mess as soon as you start driving or delaying the signal. I tried this on iphone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, ipad 2, ipad 4, ipad 5, and a slew of others I wasn’t sure on the make.
Otherwise - this cable is really great. I’ve been using it lately to plug my MD directly into my phone to record video demos.
oh maaan… I sorta went ALL IN today
I needed an audio interface for the macbook anyway… so I went and bought an Apogee Duet USB (on a 10 month interest free layaway plan - 4sound in Scandinavia has this opportunity )
I still haven’t really tested, as I’m having some DB25 plug problems… but tonight is dedicated to studio work and a bottle of Chardonnay (yes my weekends are on workdays due to weird working hours)
so now I have a really sweet audio interface which works for my ipad3 as well as my Iphone5 (yes I live in a Rich country) and i also bought AUFX space… which on my first simple test with iPad mic sounds just fine for my reverb needs… will post back when it’s all up and running
thanx for all replies and ideas guys… I LOVE THIS FORUM
