iOS apps on M1 Macs

Speaking for myself, there are a few apps that work well as ios audio units that I would love to be able to use as macos audio units, and not purely for the purpose of cheaping out. But no, it’s probably not something I would use all the time.

More broadly though: what I like about ios music making apps is that while they’re generally less capable than desktop software, they seem to be built more around fun, ease of use, and unique concepts, which I find appealing as a non-professional. At one time, I hoped that a similar market for post-ios desktop music software would emerge: fun musical tools/toys without complicated feature sets or professional price tags. That seems to not have happened, and I’m sure it’s sales volume-related, as you’ve pointed out. Instead we’re getting the same pro-level tools with subscription models, rent to own, etc.; or coming form the other direction, something like Korg Gadget which is 5x the price on macos.

Running M1 ios apps on my M1 mac is not going to be a 100% solution to this problem, but I would prefer having the capability if it were up to me.

How do you intergrate iPad and your Mac M1?

Yeah it’s different markets … apps are ‘consumables’ on iOS , people try them out, move on … buy lots. They are not seen as ‘investments’

( generally, of course there are many exceptions to this - both users and apps)

Desktop apps have never been that way …

Of course, both Apple and Microsoft really want this to happen with their App Stores ( and commission they get  )

But generally, consumers have not bought in.

So, we’ve a Chicken n’ Egg situation, no real point in devs investing in something that’s a small market … and consumers not finding anything in the App Store.

As I said, I think that is Apples motivation with the iOS apps on Mac … to try to bring that ecosystem and mentality to the desktop.

…. Will it work? If it does, it’ll likely be in the gaming arena first

If you plug in your iPad and Mac via usb, you can go to audio/midi settings on your mac and enable it as a 2 channel audio output and midi input. At that point, all audio apps are at your disposal. I really enjoy using aum with renoise as the sequencer, same with beathawk and korg gadget.

I also use it all the time to sample things from Hulu, Netflix, prime, etc…

I can see koala fx in ableton plugins but can not open it. Do you have a trick ?

I wrote in my post ‘unsure about vst etc in ableton ‘

I have an iPad for music making, but don’t have an Apple laptop. If I had one, would I be able to make my music on the iPad (eg. On Drambo), and have that sync Kontakt or other libraries that are running on an Apple laptop?

How would the connection be set up?
Thank you!

my assumption is yes, but i’ve only sequenced the iPad with software on my mac (mainly renoise) and the polyend tracker.

How did you set this up technically?

the ipad is just being used as a sound module, it’s just a midi destination in renoise. you don’t need a mac to do this; you can get a midi/audio interface for the ipad and use it with any computer.

having a mac only makes it slightly easier to do.
