I will be travelling a lot in the near future and I wish to use the time on the plane to create drum and other sounds that I can use for my OT and AR.
At the same time I am also looking for a DAW software for iPad. Often, Auria, Cubasis and FL are mentioned… what would you recommend?
The focus is not on song writing but on creating new drum sounds (e.g. by layering, equing, compressing, etc)
not sure i understand ur focus is: u mention making sounds for later AR import. a DAW would rather make sense if u want to control AR via midi, and sample and arrange AR recordings.
some recommendations for generating drum sounds and loops
sector, samplr, stroke machine
utilities: audio share, audiobus
fx: cant really recommend anything here, worth to say gliderverb and adelay seem to be the only decent free fx
i would recommend also asking this question at forum.audiob.us, as that’s the most active forum on ios music apps i know of.
audiobus and iaa have come a long way in the past couple of years, but in my limited experience, it will save you a lot of grief if you start by focusing on self-contained apps. lots of these exist, but as far as specific recommendations, maybe let us know a bit about what kind of music you want to work on or what kind of sounds you want to make. (i find some apps lend themselves more naturally to certain styles and approaches.)
One app you should look into is Impaktor.
It uses microphone input as an impulse for creating all kinds of percussive sounds.
Two multi-FX apps that are great for mangling sounds are Turnado and
Flux:FX
SeekBeats is a great ios drum synth. Tons of parameters to tweak, and also has interesting scene like status saving that works a lot easier than the rytm.
The best DAW for your uses is probably Auria. I have Auria, Cubasis and Fl. Auria sounds the best, and the effects are very good. But it doesn’t do Midi so I use Cubasis for that, but may not once the Auria midi upgrade is out.
I really don’t like FL mobile at all, and I love FL Studio. I was really disappointed with it.
For drum synthesis I like Elastic Drums and Stroke Machine.
Stroke Machine has a pretty powerful drum syntthesis engine. A drum sound design playground, short of a virtual modular like Audulus/Zmors Modular/etc.
