Introducing Tonverk

My approach so far has been: Take time to get the sample just right then play the fx & mod. It’s been very very rewarding so far…. I don’t mind admitting I got a bit emotional about it at one point tonight. :joy:

Mine arrived this afternoon, I was very enthusiastic the last few days and so looking forward to try it out myself and the first impressions are very positive:

  • Tonverk is VERY EASY to use if you know one of the DT/ST/DN devices :star2:
  • Excellent sound quality!
  • The FX are very nice (DAISY DELAY and CHRONO PITCH are awesome) :star2:
  • Many insert FX slots! :star2:
  • SD card :star2:
  • USB-C :star2:
  • Form factor (and it really looks and feels awesome IRL) :star2:
  • Beautiful crafted art work! :star2:

Unfortunately I also came across these things:

Regarding the autosampler: If you press the [YES] button multiple times in step 1 to test the autosampler you can see the latency going from around 17ms to about 185ms. Which is also happening during sampling so the results are indeed useless.

Which tells me there are some serious issues regarding realtime audio processing going on. The many reported syncing issues probably have the same cause.

And there are unfortunately many other things:

  • Boot time is very slow compared to other Elektrons
  • Scrolling is sometimes very sluggish
  • No zooming for longer samples (very much needed!)
  • Some instruments (factory content) are not previewable (I get ticking noises, the instruments do load fine however)
  • Autosampled instruments cannot be edited or adjusted at all
  • When you load a preset on a track with an existing preset, the settings of the insert FX are kept from the existing one (very annoying!)
  • No velocity modulation
  • Very bare bone configuration options (regarding MIDI channels etc.)

Some I can live with, as most bugs and missing features will be resolved with firmware updates (there is even a card in the box that says “check for updates!” ) and some things are annoying but doable, no piece of gear is perfect.

But these latency issues (exposed by the autosampler and reported syncing issues) made me a bit sad, as I really like other Elektron devices because of their stability and real-time behaviour. This feels like a bit sluggish and like computer problems (latency, buffer size etc) which I do not want with my hardware sampler / groovebox.

So until now Tonverk feels a bit rushed if I’m honest, and this is a shame as the potential is there…

Sorry for the off topic question but what stand is that?

My thoughts after making a few patterns and multisampling from Roland Cloud:

  1. Endless encoder on the volume. Holy shit.
  2. The power switch is momentary. That is going to fuck me up between my OT2 and my DN2
  3. I detected no delay on the multi-sampling. I’d love a full keyboard view for selecting range because most people won’t need all 88 notes of something sampled.
  4. Button placement will take getting used to. Everything is slightly different.
  5. Naming your own multi-sampled instruments cannot come soon enough.

What does that mean?

it’s strange to me that Elektron (and many hardware companies) release stuff before it’s ready . they have a very successful line of products, surely they can’t be that strapped for cash.

It’s not a latching switch.

It’s not a “permanent switch” as on DT/ST/DN etc, but a sort of “soft switch”: It goes back to the initial position once you pressed it.

Will you keep the DT2 since getting the TV besides the obvious slicing and machines which I think in time will be introduced into the TV.

Page loop is a shocker and quite telling. I don’t like that it feels so unfinished, it’s a really unpleasant trend across industries nowadays (releasing early and upgrading it later)

Same feelings here. I need to learn how to modulate the effects more. I wasn’t really getting much movement out of my pad samples. May be my issue as I still learn the machine. I still am not sure if I have found all the effects. I’ll route a track to a bus and then into the master but I think I’m by by missing some the new reverbs and delays. Sample a piano from vinyl into it and got some decent ideas but nothing really grabbed me. I may just be tired today and not that inspired.

I think tomorrow I will take a fresh approach with it. Good news is the sampling quality is excellent. Bad news for me is mine records very loudly but the output is low. I can’t figure out how to boost it. Everything is at 100 and the volume knob is maxed as well. It may be by design but mine peaks at around -18db, which doesn’t feel right.

I couldn’t even get good ideas going just focusing on modulating the LPF. I think I just need to sleep and take it on while rested.

This sounds more negative than it really is. I see a lot of potential with this box.

It definitely needs an update. They will need to give it a lot of love very quickly to combat the reviews that will be pouring in.

absolutely… we should stopp buying early

I believe Elektron is very well aware of the TV’s current shortcomings in software and put this card saying “check for updates today” inside the box for a good reason.

My interpretation of it is “we’re working very hard on getting updates out to you ASAP”. May have faced unforeseen issues during development, it’s a new platform after all, which most likely means code could not be ported from older devices easily (=shitload of effort).

There was obviously a race condition between the marketing and development departments, so I can partially understand all the frustration.

yet, let’s not be angry but patient and let’s enjoy what it can do for us today

no absolutely not

Oooof, Is there mod destination for this?

If this is a complete new platform (CPU, coding, etc.), I can imagine that not everything is going well. I guess users need to wait till the most bugs or problems are somewhat solved.

I think I’ll wait till my birthday early next year. This could potentially be a tool from Elektron I could buy.

Btw according to a guy from another forum, it seems like it is an ARM-design, wifi and Bluetooth also onboard

no mention of Overbdrige in the manual at all

Yes, one of the destinations on the Sends’ LFOs is Routing: Output.

Whats wrong with -18dBFS (peak)? Thats more than enough for a clean audio capture at 24bit bit depths. If the noisefloor is low, as it should be, boosting in post will not be a problem in the least

Also, I have to aks, are you connecting via USB audio or via the analogue outputs? And if via analogue outputs, what are your audio interface inputs specs in terms of max dBu they can take?
