I said lot of negativ things about this m:s box, let me say one positive thing: it has good old gritty sound. Like that.

The E2’s I owned were noisy when I was sequencing external gear with them. And the FX are rather bad imho. Don’t get me wrong… they are fun devices, that can do loads. But buy it second hand if you’re considering picking one up, and check out GrooveRider GR-16 for the iPad first.

How is it possible for an E2 to be noisy when sequencing external gear?

The only possible noise scenario is USB hum, which is most likely to be due to the computer.

They sometimes have a bit of background noise from the power supply. Happened to a friend of mine (I also had a E2S and did not have that problem). Replacement PSU fixed it for him.

Thanks man, not going to be buying either the E2 or the MS anytime soon as I’m very happy with my OT at the moment. Using my IPad for portable stuffs so will certainly check out that app, thanks!

This makes me wonder…

The few positive reactions I’ve seen for the M:S outside of this forum have been the hiphop crowd (esp lo-fi). A lot of the criticism has come from a more techno/dance and electronic music perspective (lack of inputs, limited capabilities compared to other Elektron products) - people who like to get nerdy about sound creation, production etc.

While there’s clearly a lot of hiphop that takes the similar technical approach, there’s also a culture of more improvisational and ‘quick n dirty’ approaches

Elektron made its name in dance music but I’ve noticed that the DigiTakt (and to a lesser degree the OT) has had some degree of crossover success in the hiphop scene. At the same time, its cost and lack of immediacy may have been barriers to entry.

The M:S cuts the cost somewhat (and I’m guessing street prices will drop within the first year) and the immediacy is massively increased - for people who want to ‘play’ their instrument with finger drumming and live nob-twiddling it’s an obvious winner.

Yeah it doesn’t sample, but how many people are sampling from vinyl these days rather than grabbing audio from youtube? Yeah you’re going to need a computer, but how many people are really otb outside of gearhead forums?

Obviously, this might not sit well with Elektron’s current fan base who are technically-inclined, with interests and needs that supersede the M:S’s abilities, but it may be the case that this is a rather smart entry into a growing market for Elektron, and possibly a very focussed device for that intended market.

Of course, it’s not being marketed by Elektron as such, so what I’ve said may all be bull, but then the history of music hardware is full of such ‘happy accidents’

ive been comparing this unit to the SP 404sx. although they fundamentally take a different approach to using samples (M:S is a sequencer powerhouse while the SP series has always been more about resampling live play) i still think there’s parallels. like the SP the MS is an aesthetically designed sample player (?) with tactile access to a suite of real time dsp effects, knobby and gritty, looks good on camera, no menu diving, and, same price point (~$400). i think its smart for elektron to cater to the “live jam” quick’n’dirty beatmaking scene, i dont really view this as an “entry level” product so much as a really good drum machine for people who want to film themselves making beats on the porch. but i get that people who know the company for MnM/MD/OT will be disappointed.

This thing has only served to make me love my ARmk2 even more :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::heart_eyes::heart:

Eek, gotta say tho that the copy on the Elektron website doesn’t sound totally convinced about the product.

‘You get pretty much all of the Elektron superpowers…’ sounds kinda apologetic, especially when compared to ‘Digitakt is a formidable drum machine and sampler. With an astounding feature set and an exquisite digital sound engine, the stage is set for a striking encounter.’

yeah there’s better ways to say it has “elektron superpowers” without giving away that its missing a few in the first line of copy!

Good point, i can see hip hop musicians using it maybe more than any other sector, including young cash-strapped humans.

i have no data to back this up mind, its just a hunch.

I really dont think anybody whois struggling for money is gonna buy this

I was using 6 of the tracks to sequence external gear… the rest of the tracks were used for internal drums. I could clearly hear noise from the first 6 tracks

You can load up to 64 MB (about 11 minutes) of samples in a project, using a maximum of 576 sample
slots (One dedicated slot for each track in each pattern in a project).

How long does it take to load a new sample in a track?
Let say the pattern is playing and I would like to replace a sample without stopping the sequencer, will there be a pause or silence?
