Introducing Digitone

@Ess in the @cuckoo video you also said the arp on the DN was p-lockable- I don’t know if this was a misspeak or legit.

Can you actually p-lock elements of the arp on the DN?!

Also- is retrig really available for this synth?

When is the viable option to not having song mode coming? I’m still interested in getting a DT if/when then is sorted out.

Yes!! SND - Atavism is an amazing record. It really did kickstart my obsession with FM. That’s when I started to get my hands on every FM synth I could find… Even had an FS1r at one point (which the record was made with) - that’s a really special one.

Mark Fell, one of the members of SND, has actually made some patches for the Digitone factory content. It’s so cool to have him on board, feels like it’s come full circle.

Did I? In that case it was either a misspeak or misunderstanding. That said, I would love to have that feature but the current system makes it a bit difficult. Perhaps there’s a way to solve that, but I cannot promise anything.

No retrig, no.

Shoot- that’s what I thought.

And I guess the retrig was accidentally input into the manual.

Oh well- thanks for the response

I hope we can add something like that, I do read a lot of your (all here) comments and see that is an oft-requested feature. As always, cannot promise anything, but I hear you!

Thats what im thinking atm. DT&ND2 on drums, eurack and add digitone after i master all of the above. Hoping this will be all the outboard i need.

One thing I don’t see in the DN is a noise source. Weird. I guess there is some clever way to get some white noise going using harmonics together with the overdrive. I wonder how that works. There’s clearly some snare-type sounds in the demos so there must be a way.

Thx. I really hope it happens.

Operator feedback at max will get you there! By using the Mix functionality in smart ways you can make really intricate drum sounds.

I am no engineer, but I understand how hard it must be to design an instrument which is inspiring and not too complex to use, but at the same time flexible enough to cater for a large group of people.

The Digitone looks like a success already, at least from where I stand. Well done!

Thanks. Now that explains why the polyphony it limited to 8 voices!

FWIW, I, and I’m sure other people as well, would love to hear more nerdy details from you and others on the development team about the hardware and software development process of the DN and the DT.

Possibly replacing altogether!

This is also one reason why the 4-operator FM synths were preferred by most early Techno musicians.

Well, and the fact that they were a lot cheaper…

Availability?

There was a very brief period during which they were available straight from Elektron. But they’ve sold out for now.

It‘s actually easy to create noise from sine waves with FM:

Been jamming SND going back to the old Mille Plateaux days and Mark Fell continues to bend my ear in all kinds of fantastic ways. Glad to know he’s appreciated in these parts.

I saw there’s a Cuckoo vid on the Digitone somewhere around here, which I’m looking forward to watching

Yes thanks, the feedback thing makes sense. It’s just that all software FM synths that I dealt with have dedicated noise sources so you can fine dose it so you are not just sending the whole engine into white noise. But I guess as Simon explained it you can use the XY control to basically mix-in the white noise from the operators that the feedback is macro-mapped to to the ones where it isn’t mapped to.

A bit on the side here, but I’m just wondering, are there any drawbacks to having 6 operators? Like are there certain things you can achieve by just having 4 that 6 would hinder? I’m thinking for instance, if i want to get into using FM8, could i just think of it as a 4 operator synth for simplicity? Just to be clear, this is not some sort of criticism of the DN having 4 operators, I’m just not that well versed when it comes to FM.
