The ST has been demoted?

Just took the Digitone 2 for a whirl seeing the new update is out. It’s so nice to have it integrated with Ableton  One thing that I can’t seem to get to work is the CAPTURE-function in Ableton, when I’m sequencing via the keyboard on the Digitone 2 - ie noodling around with the keyboard and wanting to capture the noodle I just did to then surgically remove all the errors I make whilst playing

The CAPTURE-function is there if I sequence the Digitone 2 with my normal computer keyboard or with a MIDI keyboard. Hmm. Anyone has a clue what I’m missing here?

what are your MIDI input settings in live?

They look like this:

In the Digitone 2 the SYNC settings are all checked yes to send, and I’m sending via USB.

UPDATE: Ok, so if I set the chosen track to MIDI and then send it to Ableton and reroute it to one of the other tracks on the Digitone then it works. So I can effectively just use track 1 for MIDI on the Digitone and then send it to track 2-16 via Ableton. Fairly easy

Possibly neither here nor there, but here’s a story…

I’m trying to compile a new record. I’ve written a silly amount of songs since my last release and I basically record everything. So I narrowed it down to my top 30 or so tunes and shared that folder with about 10 friends to critique. All of them are or have been in the music business and have good critical listening skills. Most of them don’t listen to my sort of music and one person whose opinion I value greatly, doesn’t really like my music at all! But he’s honest and kind and provides great insight.

All this to say, from the feedback I’ve received so far, the top ratings I’m getting are tunes I did only or mostly on the DN2. Possibly a coincidence
, but…

A few thoughts to consider…

  1. The DN2 is surely one of your newest boxes. Therefore, by default, presumably, anything you’ve done on it will represent your most current work. And we can only hope that we’re always improving, right?

  2. Sonics are never trivial. Hence why an arrangement written on one instrument doesn’t always translate to another. So, it’s possible that your particular musical sensibilities are simply better served by whatever tonal fingerprint the DN2 brings to your compositions.

  3. Working on a single instrument brings focus, which unquestionably translates to your audience. And when an instrument speaks to you thusly, it will draw out your best work. Indeed, the value of an instrument that inspires you to play is unquantifiable.

Most likely it’s a balance of all these things.

Cheers!

Good points you’re making. I might add: you often make quite interesting tunes with a new Elektron, since you’re still excited, exploring and discovering, without any routines youā€˜ve established for yourself with the new machine. At least for me, this often means that my first patterns are among the most interesting ones (but also messy at times).

What we can conclude is not necessarily that DN II is the best synth/drum machine/groovebox there is and it sounds so superior (which would be a stupid thing to say anyways). But that the combination of its strengths, it’s perfect for @Snipecatcher to make their best music.

Iā€˜m pretty sure the same won’t be true for me, since Iā€˜ve fallen back to being a preset surfer on DN II, which means the things I write on it feel a bit less like ā€žmeā€œ than on other machines.

Had the digitone 1 when it first came out for about a week before I returned it.
Felt too limiting track wise, machines and clumsy compared to the monomachine

Im a week in with the digitone 2 and this is a keeper.
First time since the Md that elektron had had 16 tracks.
Fm tone is amazing.
Congrats to elektron

Regarding the discourse several comments up, I wouldn’t presume to know how another user distributes their time amongst new vs old gear. Or even how individuals approach working with singular or multiple instruments as we are, in fact, individuals.

Not everything requires analysis. I think that we can just support each other’s efforts and hope that others support ours.

Obviously DNII is going to be inspiring, just look at it.

This is certainly not the sentiment I felt was being conveyed, but anyway…

Hey everyone, I’m working on a soundpack based on essential sounds. I made a google doc that is shared for everyone to edit, so everyone can add desires of what to have on the DN II:

It’s not necessarily an idea for a sound but rather a general remark, so I’ll put it here — IMO there’s a lot of patches for the original engine, so if you could focus more on the wave tone and swarmer engines, that would be great.

Does someone know why Digitone II still has the old USB B rather than USB C connection?

I keep saying this too.

Maybe because it is mechanical more robust. What advantages do you expect from a USB C connector?
