Interface/mixer advice for Rytm/iPad combo?

I need some advice, folks. I have an iPad, an iTrack Dock and an Elektron Analog Rytm. I want to play synths/guitar on the iPad alongside the Rytm drums, and have the sound come out of my AV Receiver.

The sound from the iPad is not loud enough when put directly into the Rytm as you can’t adjust the levels, so I tried it the other way around by going from the Rytm’s headphones output into the Line In of the iTrack Dock. Unfortunately, though, the Line In is sounding really muddy for some reason (yet another flaw with the iTrack dock, it seems! Or maybe I shouldn’t use the Rytm’s headphones output but the main L/R outputs instead - what do you think about that? I don’t see why it should make a difference…)

Anyway, what I reckon I’m looking for is an interface that will let me plug in the iPad and Rytm, allow me to adjust the relative levels and connect the end result up to my AV Receiver. As a secondary requirement, it would be cool if this would also allow me to record both devices into Logic Pro X simultaneously when connecting to a Mac.

Any ideas, folks? I don’t want to spend a ton of money, but I want my devices to work together!

If you’re not in a hurry, it might be a good idea to wait until overbridge comes out. Then you only need to input your ipad to your DAW (as AFAIK overbridge will send all channels from the AR to your DAW via the USB connection?), so you might not even need to buy more gear…

That’s a good point, there’s no harm in me waiting for Overbridge!

As a side-question, I saw in Cuckoo’s last video about how to record MIDI data in Logic using the Rytm and then play it back, but can audio already be recorded in Logic when connected to a Mac via USB (I know it’ll only be on one track until Overbridge is here)?

If you decide to get a audio interface I’d highly recommend the Steinberg UR44. It has a class compliant ipad mode at the flick of a switch and since Steinberg makes Cubasis (Ipad DAW) they seem to really be focused on making sure it works as a platform. They recently even released a app (dspMixFx) that lets you use the onboard DSP effects of the UR44 with the Ipad.

The front inputs have input level knobs on the device and the inputs on the back are controlled with the dspMixFx so adjusting levels is easy enough.

And the Yamaha D-PRE preamps on it sound really good. I’m very happy with mine.
