So let’s make an inspirational thread. Let’s not talk to much about gear but more about music. What interesting techniques do you like to use (feel free to share examples).
Think polyrythms or hemiolas and other such techniques. Share ideas for people to try.
Speaking of Polyrythms, the new melody sequencer mode for the Push is BUILT for producing them. You can construct rhythmic sequences and then just keep altering step lengths and adding new tracks.
I really love Recording loops from synths and samplers into session view and getting into a groove and producing 5-10 new takes on what I’ve just recorded is pretty inspiring.
I think my pure music suggestion is getting your hands dirty with your percussion and throwing together some pad sequenced stuff and keeping it in a folder you build over time. You really get intimate with each little hit and really hear what’s happening to it in the mix when you’ve built it from chopped samples and filtering/FX or carefully selected one shots.
Not something many will have fun with or find productive but something I’ve had some joy with recently is chucking short pieces of audio (drums with bass, pads, leads, etc) I’ve recorded in my OT into Live and then using the audio to midi convertor.
With the process not being perfect you quite often come out with stranger but more unique variations of what you put in. Once the midi track is layered on top of the original audio track it gives it a great extra dimension.
I always intend to make use of that feature more regularly, but every time the load bar comes up, I realize it’s going to take 5 minutes more than I want it to and cancel it.
What size of audio are you converting? Im typically working with anything up to 8 bar loops and have to say that it converts very quickly. Last night it was just a few seconds to convert 2 bar loops. Perhaps 9.1 (and prior updates) have improved the process? Try it again and see how you get on, I do seem to remember some lengthy conversions from the early days but no longer.
