Instruō / Modern Biology Pocket Scíon

its cool seeing “how it works” nearly front page of the manual

An RC circuit.

( Someone else please check my work. )

Seems correct. So not bioelectricity as such

how would it be different if it measured bioelectricity instead of the changes in resistance? wouldnt the changes in resistance be a result of bioelectrical processes?

Modern Biology still describes it that way and it seems like this world is kind of his whole thing:

My name is Modern Biology and I make music with plants and mushrooms. I’ve been hosting events around the world for almost 5 years, using Instruō’s SCÍON device as the heart of a system that uses small changes in the bioelectricity of organisms to trigger note and rhythm changes on a modular synthesizer.

No.

First way to think about this is the difference between an ohmmeter ( for resistance / conductance ) and a voltmeter. ( measures electrical potential ).

The resistance or conductance is more a passive sort of thing, though changable with biological processes ( like sweating ), as opposed to electrical potential which takes an energy input to generate, whether biologically or physically ( like a thunderstorm, or electrical potential in the air, or a battery ).

In biological processes electrical potential is generated by the movement of ( ususually positive ) ions. Nerve cells are tiny active ion pumps. Muscles activate from nervous electrical pulses using actin to move.

In the field of bioelectricity, it is importamt to mention the pioneering genius of that science Albert Szent-Györgyi.

Note i posted about a brainwave musical system in this post, which has to do with electrical potential.

so im hearing there is a difference in what is being measured and the biological processes that make those measurements change. so the resulting sounds are based on what measurements are being made and how those are mapped to the synth engine. excited to try it out!

It arrived yesterday and just had a play with it this morning

This is 5 instances of Monomono Maya in Ableton controlled by the Pocket Scion and then the Digitone set to the same key and scale and me playing notes in key.

im having fun. so far my oldest plant is my most reactive. funny enough, i tried a succulent i got as a gift recently and it wasnt very reactive. it responded when i pinched the tips of it’s cactusy limbs. i cant tell how much my interactions are causing changes in the tunes, i feel they are and other times they arent, its really fun.
