Ink Jet - BABY - all-Rytm EP

Hey Elektronauts,
I just released a new EP called Baby. It’s entirely made from a single set on the Rytm. All of the tunes are just stereo bounces from the Rytm with a little mastering. It’s a combination of synths + lots of samples.

Enjoy!

Awesome stuff, man! It’s so different from anything else you hear on this forum. It’s making me reevaluate how I use my Rytm, letting the A4 do all the melodic stuff, when I really should get more into sampling!

What’s your workflow for sampling into the Rytm? Any tips for this sort of sampling wizardry?

And is it completely samples, or are there some of the drum synths in there too?

Oh Baby is definitely my favourite track at the moment, so sick.

Very cool fam!! Would love some insight into how you made the tracks. Peace!

Awesome work jamrod! i’ll share this with my friends, it’s a treat to listen to

Hey guys, thanks so much for checking it out!

Some more info on what’s going on:
[ul]
[li]For the most part, the “instrumental” part of each beat is a single diced up sample. I did all of this before getting Strom, which would have been really useful, Instead I was chopping via start point parameter locking. But it’s very much MPC-style hip-hop sample treatment.[/li]
[li]Even though it’s usually a single sample and each AR voice is mono, I did a decent amount of work getting some pseudo stereo. Often I have the main sample on the MT track, so I would copy the track over to the LT.and pitch it up/down an octave. Then I would pan the two copies and make other variations.[/li]
[li]Similarly, I like having stereo claps/snares. On a lot of the tracks I’ll use both clap and snare tracks simultaneously, with microtiming delays and panning to give width.[/li]
[li]There are definitely drum synths all over it. Most (all?) of the kicks are pure synth, and snare/claps/hats are usually synths layered with samples.[/li]
[li]The vocals are usually individual words (the track titles) chopped from several a cappella tracks. E.g., I’ll take the word “hey” from a few different songs and make melodies out of those samples. I actually made a sample chain for each word à la OT practice.[/li]

I have to say that even though the OT makes more sense for sampling in a lot of ways, I kind of prefer the AR is an all-in-one beat machine. I often found myself constrained by the ± octave pitching on the OT when I was building melodies, but the AR lets me run free. And I’m generally totally fine without timestretching, as I don’t really work with loops. Looking forward to using Strom to make some new tracks.

Oh and finally, the compressor on the AR is great. Heavy use all over these tunes.

Dope man, my fav part of the MDUW was playing with start points of samples to chop. With the Octatrack I guess I forgot this technique! Excited to load up some longer samples and play with P-Locking the start points. Thanks for sharing homie! Should be a fun session with the RYTM tonight!

(This forum keeps deleting my text whenever I put it in the same post as a video.)

Anyway as an experiment I hired an online freelancer to create a super low budget music video for the first track off of Baby. The above vid is what he sent over.

I’m going to try to re-edit it into something cooler when I have a chance, but for now, there it is.

That’s crazy awesome

This is really great stuff! Kind of surprised the Rytm pushed the OT out of your setup, too!

Beautiful work jamrod. Congrats.

It reminds me a lot of DJ Rashad (RIP) But yours definitely holds it’s own. It’s like a pointillist beating heart. The more soul in music the better.

I just started messing with LFOs, delay, pan, microtiming and plocks and found a lot of groove in the AR. Got my foot tapping madly. I’ll study Baby to go even further.

Now that I think about it, AR Request: LFOs to microtiming.

:joy: Thanks. Makes me happy that you hear some Rashad in it, he was definitely a big inspiration as I was making these tracks.
Yeah, it would be amazing if you could modulate microtiming. Lots of possibilities for breathing grooves like that.
