Import custom groove templates?

I’ve been watching videos and reading about the OT for a couple of weeks now and I’ve pretty much decided I’m going to get one but I was just wondering if I could import custom groove templates to quantise to? Basically, could you use the Octatrack to sound like FlyLo/ Max graef?

The octatrack excels as groove machine. You can import sample loops and automatically adjust to tempo. Than you can mangle the sample like hell using some additional triggers and effects and create a new groove in no time.

It also has a powerful sequencer to create you own loops. Its doen’t have standard grooves. But it has all the capability to make one, like microtiming, swing, etc.

You can’t import grooves. Nor can you “live record” unquantized sequences. So you have to place new triggers perfectly on the grid. But like noxical says you can then use microtiming to shift triggers around manually afterwards, which is very easy and fast to do. You hold down the trigger you want to move and use the cursor keys to nudge that step in either direction.

The swing feature is also nice. You can mark which steps will be affected by the swing setting, so the swing doesn’t have to affect all even-numbered steps if you don’t want to (it does so by default, though).

Slightly off topic:
A developer here (Rusty) is close to releasing a very impressive and powerful PC editor for the Octatrack. Perhaps “Apply groove template to pattern” is an idea he’d like?

You can totally live record, just hold the [rec], press [play] and hammer it out. After you are finished you can enter the microtiming screen and see where they ended up.
This is how I record all my hip hop styled drum patterns. I’ve developed a pretty solid technique of not so much pressing down on the sample trigs but instead smacking them in a fast motion which then drags my finger towards me and off the edge at the bottom.

Nice! I use live recording from time to time, but didn’t know it could be done unquantized. I’ll probably be using that for hihats from now on, then.

Yeah bud. You’ll have to check your personalized settings and make sure you have live quant turned off.
