I'm selling my Octa for a Tempest + Mpc 1000 setup: stop me!

if your after sequencing why not get the squarp pyramid?

Says who? different machines man

As a Elektron newbie but also an user of a MPC2500 I think that these machines both have pros and cons, they are so different to compare.
The Tempest is still calling me somehow but mainly for the raw oscillators, however, the high price and rather poor sequencer compared to my AR is keeping me away.

Depends what you are doing with a MPC. Typically it’s just the other way around and people complain that working with an Elektron unit is way more complex then working on a MPC. There are even people claiming that you don’t need a manual to get your way on a MPC and as far as my experience is, this is almost true

Same, didn’t need the manual very long on the MPC, which is good cuz the jjos manuals are terrible!
Where as I figured lots of the octatrack out, but I also forgot a bunch and still need the manual sometimes

Why would we we stop you?
It’s your music, surely you know what you want.
Pretty hard for anyone else to tell you what you want.

So what am i doing wrong ?
I have used some weird software and tools but the mpc1k with jjos2xl isnt as easy as most.

I really want to get into it. Any advice ? There isnt any good manual or clear videos with the process explained :frowning:

Have you used any other Os’es on your MPC?

IME the easiest learning curve is to start with the AkaiOS, then jump to JJOS1, and only then go to JJOS2XL etc. Learning the OS’es in this order makes everything a lot more intuitive, as the form of JJOS as it is now has been an evolutionary process (and the manuals of current JJOS’es are written to people who are already familiar with AkaiOS & JJOS1 IMO)

Yes but this is mostly about sampling. I want to sequence stuff too.
I’ll get it anyway thanks
@stutech no i’ve never used the other OS. I got it with JJOS2XL so i thought i should learn it like this.
I need probably to invest time in it yes. But i’m not sure it’s worth it vs my current setup

I still recommend you give the AkaiOS a spin. I found it alot more intuitive to learn, and JJOS1 seemed quite manageable after that.

Well after 3 days with my Mpc 1000 (jjos2xl) i can definetely say that i don’t need the Octatrack anymore. I’ll replace it with a lovely Tempest.

Cheers to everyone!

I’ve got both and I would keep the OT anyway, for midi lfos, step sequenceur. Complementary.

Talking about midi, OT step sequencer is much faster and efficient for programming drums, make it groove with plocks, lfos, even arpegios. You can use several midi tracks to program a rythm, and then record it in Mpc if you want.

Mpc is better for midi overdub, longer sequences, polyphony. More linear approach. With the Blofeld in Multi Mode, of course it will be better too.

It is easy to record midi in both way.
Maybe you should keep the OT for a while to check the possibilties of this powerfull combo.

Yeah, the step sequencer is fast but the 64 steps limit was a problem for me. Other than that, i can’t justify a 1k piece of gear for just some small advantages.

I can’t think of any other way to say it. That’s a really cute set up. Like, all of your bases are covered in such a quaint line o’ gear

KWH Wasn’t Happy with Ot! Of course if you just use midi. I love audio part of Ot, and was a bit disappointed with midi, (lack of polyphony and overdub) so a bought an Mpc 1000 again, but I didn’t touch it for one year!

Mpc with Jjos2xl is covering a lot of midi needs, you can load and play midifiles, send sysex, but not all messages. For ex I couldn’t send a Start FA message to sync perfectly the arp of my Taktile keyboard . I needeed a Midi Solution Ep+ for that. I think I will try Os3 soon for some reasons.

Maybe many ways to say a lot of things. I’m getting old and my back is painful! So I wish a powerful little light setup with maybe a Pulse 2 instead of A4!

I still have a tiny 15 years old Yamaha Qy100 sequencer/arranger with much more midi possibilities than the Ot. Not a lot of fun though.

Best of Mpc 1000 is simple midi overdub, polyphony, real-time quantize. Don’t know if I will fully use sampling part. Have to prepare samples in Ot maybe!

I think the only big disappointment I have about the Octatrack is that the MIDI is a step sequencer only. I just want to record my playing sometimes! An MPC to supplement is not a bad idea.
