Hello my forum-friends, let me take a moment to tell you about my delightful evening… the misses is out the house… nobody bothering me.
No nagging for tea… no look at this facebook thing… the kitchentable all for myself, HOORAY… still having some space to fill on my ep… I sit down.
kaosspad, machinedrum, octatrack… big mug of coffee. time for uncle dreammer to lay down the law and tell the machine who is boss… (alaas, I was a fool, the wish of mastery is a road to many failures…) but being brave I had an attempt… and yes I got so far… weird fractured beats, lots of counting to 24… it appears that my sonic wishes are found with allot of settings on 24… so gloriously, I learned something new… more beats are flying, synths are bleeping… somebody was yelling lalalalalalaalalaa… sensational… dancing on my spot… it turns out I do have some groove left in my old bones… so it needed just 1 more thing… a nice synthy effect screaming whaaaaaaaaaaaah… so I lay down the base notes… it got 200% more funky… I felt so proud… so the last touch… the filler notes…
me feeling in the mood to play them realtime, so I pressed function and my keys in playmode… Yeah… it was good, smoking…
so while my finger is still on function, I pressed the recordbutton… cause yeah in the mood you know it… and it happened…my finger touched the play button… suddenly my glitches made no sense… and all my sounds started looping… I pressed stop… what is going on…
I press play… NOTHING HAPPENING… oh dear did I blow up my recorder… no I did not… did I blow up my octatrack… no I didn’t… I restarted my octatrack… might it be a glitch… no it was not… the sample triggers worked… hooray I got sound… but where is my pattern…
then it dawned on me… function + play = clear pattern…
you silly boy, jamming with such passion you forgot that function + play would have restored it… but nope… it was a heated moment… I burned myself…
hahahahaha, I should have known better…
so everybody who reads this and been there… you are not alone my friend, uncle dreammer does it to…
Feel for you man, it has happened to me a few times in the past, I asked for a “Clear Pattern? Are you sure?” message to be added as a feature request years ago, but I guess it goes against the Elektron way, as none of the other machines have it, in my opinion that is bad UI design, no excuse for it. It certainly takes enjoyment away when you spent hours “in the flow” and work is lost due to this.
It is no help now, but had you noticed what had happened and repeated the clear operation before power cycling then it would have pasted it back in.
I really enjoyed reading you story. We’ve all been there - lost in the moment and not paying enough attention, when suddenly everything comes crashing down …or goes silent!
I have trained myself to SAVE and COPY all the time. Probably every minute or two.
yeah, but it would be a piece of p!$$ to add a user selectable foolproof ‘i’m a clumsy/noob’ checkbox that would make clear operations require either a Yes a Hold or a Double Tap - i for one disable the Yes only sampling feature in the OT in preference for the combo, just for safety, it’d be as easy as that for the big clear operations - whilst it’s handy that the screen now shows Undo Available semi-permanently, it’s become a pita because if you wanted to clear it has become hard to tell where you are kit wise etc as the screen ui is taken with the unwanted Undo Available flag, i wish that this flag flashed or something to see what’s beneath - it could be sorted very easily with the ability to default it to ‘as it is’ -oops, okay, i see this is an OT thread, i’m referencing Af/R stuff, but still applies, the grief i have with AR is that i use the Track button all the time thinking it’s a Function press (ouch)
had a very similar situation recently. Totally sickening if you forget about the undo functions. The failsafe prompt should be added to all there current machines.
Enjoy everybody… I kinda redid the pattern I lost… same ish sounds…
its the greatest pattern in the world, tribute… its not the same pattern, cause I cant remember… so its a tribute… of the greatest pattern in the world… honest
thank you all for sharing your stories and sympathy… I had fun sharing…
Enjoy…
