If Boards of Canada Released a new album. What Gear would they use today?

I genuinely think the answer to the initial question is “it doesn’t matter/ who cares,” and I mean that as kindly as I possibly could.

But we have the BOC pages. And they list all the equipment used by BOC. So a lot of folk do care? In fact id go as far as say a lot of folk are obsessed with how they get their sound. And im trying to be polite to your response there

I think what people mean is, you could get their sound with any number of presently available instruments, if you were them, and had their particular chops. Their music isn’t animated by the adoption and mastery of specific items, afaik

Of course you can. But what do you think they would choose?

For me, the thought experiment isn’t fun with them, because it could be anything! It doesn’t really matter. Whereas, say, it’s fun to hear aphex twin digging deeply into something new, he seems more animated by the particularities of the gear

I see your point. But they do have a distinctive sound. And we know a lot of their gear from the Pages. As this is just a hypothetical question its relevant i feel as we now have a lot more equipment. And their sound might develop after 10 years. Nobody stays the same.

It’s not what you’ve got, it’s what you do with it

Absolutely. But “how they got their sound” is mostly due to how they use what they have, not what they’re using. None of their stuff is particularly magical, they’re just good musicians. If their gear was the magic secret to their sound, we’d have many more good BoC ripoffs.

This. The interesting bit is the art (which itself is the process), not the enumeration of possessions

I think the question (as framed) tips beyond trivia even into the non-art realm and the GAS distortion field.

Most new gear could be utilized to make their sounds by an artist, maybe a better approach would be sharing something influenced by them as a tribute both to their work and what you have now?

I love instruments but I love tips for using any over discussing the having and possession of them as self-justifying. Not to say I don’t have nice stuff but I have to constantly justify keeping things by use and how they make me feel (to USE)

But why would they bother with a montage with the AN1X engine when they have an original AN1X

Probably some Mayonnaise

Exactly. Heresy to some, but probably correct.
