Ideas for that big empty space on the top right of the AK

I tried to search previous threads so let me know if this already has a topic.

With all that empty surface area top right of the AK I was thinking: could Elektron create a small outboard unit (with rubber suckers!) with two additional voices? Literally just the circuit boards in a groovy little box.

I know, I know, how would it integrate with the tracks? Well, for me I’d just be happy if they just linked to Track 1 only (for example) and just added the extra polyphony on that I’d be happy. I am pretty comfortable working with four voices, but I do try and write entire tracks on the AK, so I could then just add a few more pads/textures to patterns.

I thought also about perhaps a Roland PG200 style box with additional knobs for control, but I really don’t think I’d use them now I am comfortable with the standard UI. Perhaps that’d still appeal to you.

Does this even conceptually make sense, could there be a better way of doing this? I was also just thinking about trying to keep the cost down and simplify the OS integration too.

Max £250 for simply adding the voices.

I know we have Overbridge… oh wait, I’m a Logic user, start again… I know some of us have Overbridge, but I prefer the sound of my AK when not going through a computer, so not sure if I would end up using screen based controls that much anyway.

How about a small outboard screen to give better visibility? A bit like a sat nav device (but with rubber suckers!) that you can plonk that empty space for those of us with withering eyesight? Oh, and it HAS TO BE tilt-able.

Max £100

That’s what I woke up with this morning, any legs in these ideas or any better ones out there?

Cheers.

Bottom line? They fucked up the design.

The smart thing to do, would have been to create a hollow in there, with an unscrewable top panel that you could just drop one of the other machines into flush, and then you have…

  • AK & A4 combo
  • AK & AR combo
  • AK & OT combo

@Rusty, interesting idea. :slight_smile:
Reminds me Korg M3 - Radias combo.

Could? Yes.

Will? No. Too small a potential market. There might be some hope of an OS update that would enable poly-chaining more than one AF/AK.

I don’t use DAWs but I think there are software things that can allow an iPad be used as an external display for a Mac.

Patchbay!
Then it woud be semimodular!

Ashtray.

its the perfect place for a small desktop synth or drum machine. Seems obvious to me.

Mbase or Nord Drum.
Make the most of those CV triggers and EXT inputs, plus the MIDI program change side of AK’s limited MIDI output spec.

Any small desktop synth with CV in also springs to mind. IMO it’s more interesting to have a different flavour of voice rather than more elektron oscillators. Erebus? Minitaur? Small modular, like MI braids?

That’s where I rest my H9 or timeline.

Volca keys and Volca sample might fit? Nice cheap CV buddies

I have a Roland VT-3 sitting there and it fits really well. I also have a Moog Werkstatt but it is just barely too long and one of the feet hangs off the edge making it wobble.

Really what they should have done is expanded how many knobs are on this thing over the A4. I mean I’m pretty good at working my way around their interface and it is layed out logically but I keep forgetting about some features and it takes away from the immediacy of it.

Hopefully this fits in that space perfectly!!

Just got my AK . Noticed that Ipad mini fits perfect… Be cool if Elektron made an editor for ios… Nothing too complicated. Just something basic that allowed you to display like 20 user defined parameters for tweaking… They could make a basic midi>USB/lightning cable and hey presto, a load more parameters instantly available for tweaking on top of the AK without a ton of wires or additional power supplies etc…

Nice !!! How about syncing all that ???

All syncs fine.

AK ‘MIDI ext’ goes out to Pyramid - runs as master keyboard.
Pyramid MIDI A goes to MX61 (left of shot) - multi-timbral slave.
Pyramid MIDI B goes back to AK and THRU to JU-06 - leads and bass.

Pyramid is MIDI master.

Doesn’t miss a beat

GREAT !!! :+1:
