I think I might miss chillwave

oh shit I think you just sparked the creation of a new Genre I invented…

forever more, or at least until I’ve finished this post I shall be known as the person who invented … AllWave.

thanks Suspect F, I never invented anything before

Every daisy has its day in the sun. I shall henceforward call all things Bladerunner-esque ‘Allwave’.

Working on a ‘Captain Allwave’ DX-7 VST patch as we speak!

Huge aside, but connected to vaporwave/chillwave and never seen it discussed much beyond wikipedia and history pieces.

I’ve actually been looping back to Muzak lately and reading up on how entrenched it was in the idea of using a construct of music for the purposes of… not quite thought reform but certainly a form of behavior modification. There was talent in the live instrumentation of course, but why and how it was used was certainly discomforting, I wonder if similar research done about the effects on music on humans lead to whatever military psyops campaigns that went on ~2003, music for thought reform and abuse/torture.

I feel “easy listening” Muzak could be pushed further ala Decoder (1984) - IMDb

I was watching Grimes on the Lex Friedman podcast. She had an interesting view on exposing herself to music she doesn’t like, Neuroplasticity, and older generations tending to not like newer generations music.

On Spotify the most listened to genres are the popular 70’s rock and roll, 80’s pop, 90’s indie/grunge/rap etc. People get their brains wired by the music of their youth, then the brain becomes resistant to any music that strays from those sounds and patterns.

Being a hobbyist bedroom music producer has made me want to explore genres and bands I wouldn’t normally listen to.

There is a YouTube channel dedicated to this sound.

Enjoy, it has 500+ subs and is constantly adding new music.

Speaking of weaponizing art for profit/control, liked her early music but totally dozed off when she started billionaire-fawning and pushing pro tech-feudalist ideology, seeing us as serfs to work for her and her ex. (“We Appreciate Power” indeed.)

Definitely respect This Boat Don’t Float-era Grimes more

I separate the artist from their personal politics.

Is allwave already dead or is there still time for me to jump on the bandwagon?

I feel the same way. I have a hard time listening to her stuff now as well.

Man when those horns come in at the end sounds pretty amazing

Idk if Panda Riot are chillwave (or dreampop) but they just released a new album. So yeh, still relevant.

Definitely agree about not caring about fame. I would just be happy with carving out a niche where at least a few people might listen to an album and enjoy the tracks. It’s been a long time since I’ve released anything but during that chillwave era I was able to release two eps and had a few blog reviews and followers as a result. Got just enough interest to actually make a physical CD at the time in a short run and sold almost all of them and at the time I really wasn’t any good. It’s a lot harder to do that now and I don’t really want to try to game Spotify algorithms and what not to get my music heard past my immediate friend group.

Allwave is old school already but not passe like dubstep. I hadn’t heard anything new in like forever until this kid pilldex came out with some new type Allwave shit and put his own twist on it and the kids all say it’s the too-legit-to-tit-lit, it’s similar to what everybody use to be doing with the amen break but instead pilldex religiously only uses samples from Elvis Presley clambake movies and he’s callin it Allwavy now…

Re: harder to reach people or not these days,

I’ve been under the impression that there is a lot of music out there but people are also insatiable now days, it always seems to me like it’s much easier to reach people, everyone being so connected people can do a years worth of grunt work with a few clicks on the qwerty now…

I can’t think of any good music that was good before the advent of social media that if released today wouldn’t also do well

I miss it too. Odesza is basically popular watered down chill wave to me, but it doesn’t hit the same as Neon Indian or Small Black. I also really miss Balam Acab (sp?) from that time period

remember coolrunnings? i was just revisiting this blog and kind of got nostalgic

http://humdrumeatemup.blogspot.com/2011/08/

i still love Holy Other and Balam Acab’s wander/wonder. i remember back when dem hunger’s first tape was the coolest album in the world to me

there was a time, in like 2010 when gorilla vs bear was a big blog, that i almost exclusively listened to chillwave. that was when i decided to try and make music as an experiment when i knew nothing about how to go about doing that, all i knew was reason 5 cracked and i did not understand how any of it actually worked.

so now, when im trying to remember what used to inspire me, back when i felt more creative but lacked any actual experience/knowledge, i am trying to remember chillwave artists from 2010. yeasayer and videohippos, coma cinema, persona la ave. such a weird time

Just watch it make a comeback like everything else haha, not trying to sound negative about it, “within and without” is super nostalgic for me. Gorgeous record, my tastes have evolved since 2011, but damn I’m ok with a chillwave revival if it’s done right. Also, the latest Holy Other rec is fantastic!

Hi everyone, looking for a chillwave/dayglo music video that seems to have been wiped from the internet. It involved the singer in a cadillac/convertible car with puppets in the passenger seat. They were going through a tunnel on early 80s graphics green screen. My buddy and I watched this video at the height of chillwave on Youtube so I know we aren’t imagining it. We just can’t find it anywhere from any artist we’ve gone through in the genre. Does anyone know what video/artist this possibly is?

I think Washed Out‘s Paracosm wasn’t much liked when it came out (I definitely was disappointed). But I‘ve rediscovered it last year and now think this is an all time classic with zero filler, great production and wonderful artwork. Those vibes are immaculate!

Another favorite of mine that was called chillwave (but might stretch the definition):

I‘m sure I‘ve been hugely influenced by that kind of music, since it was among the first music that used synths and samplers that really spoke to me as an indie rock kid.

Never came across this, but I like it! Definitely going to listen to this the coming days, see if it sticks.
