The Dark Side of the Microkorg
Was my first synth, had no idea what was going on but I loved it. Sadly my own inability to grasp basic synthesis and being a 100% guitar-nerd at the time forced the sale.
It was also my first and I thought it was cool. I was able to work the interface and learn substractive synthesis. Kept it a long time. I did switch to the MS2000 at some point.
Everyone had these when I didn’t know what synths were and I thought it was probably the only one of that type of thing. Like:
- Guitar
- Clarinet
- Drums
- Microkorg
Same… … . … …
I think we have two microKORGs in the studio currently…
I’m willing to go on record and say that it is a fantastic sounding synth; and, from what I’ve seen thus far, I personally prefer the original over its most recent successor.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Cheers!
Do we really have any audio examples at all to compare with though?
There are only a couple things that would be a very welcome addition 1. a better keybed 2. Audio and midi & power over usb-c (and uploading of custom pcm) 3. An analog filter or tube like kingkorg
Fingers crossed
I’m just going on aesthetics at this point.
I’m not expecting a huge leap forward in sound, but I’d be happy to be wrong.
Cheers!
Yeah curious to hear this new engine. An amazing Easter egg would be if you could switch to the original engine.
Yea man OG microkorg rules
The interface is pretty much the best for a synth with few knobs, just like the classic Waldorf racks and the Blofeld and the Yamaha an1x and the Novation Mininova.
Of course a knob laden synth is superior but when it’s a cheaper-less knob but feature rich synth I don’t think anyone has figured out a better interface. I think about the matrix 6 and the Moog source for interfaces that I hated even the kawai K3 was a bit of a pain in the ass.
The micrkorg has an excellent core sound that’s what makes it great, it’s unfortunate that the mod matrix is so lack luster but even so it’s a fantastic synth, on top of that it’s got a special place in my heart since it was my first synth. And like any synth that just sounds good it still holds up very well today. If I didn’t have the Virus TI I could see me picking up another Microkorg now
I’ve never actually owned one, but the main person in the band I’m in has used one since 2004ish and he writes all his synth parts on it. It always sounds really good and it always works well in the mix. Quite a few times we’ve tried to use other, “better” synths for those parts in the studio and went back to the MicroKorg cos it just worked.
As I see it, successors to boxes like the microKORG exist only to create the illusion of progress, for the sake of sales, and don’t really speak to innovation at all. I mean, once you’ve nailed a sound, and otherwise struck a balance between function and fashion, price point and practicality… It’s done.
Hallelujah! Now we can just make music, right?
What Korg should have done is put a keyboard on the new one, akin to the Yamaha Reface line. That would have been a welcome improvement.
Cheers!
My man, JB, still rocking the original, as we speak:
Same, wish I kept mine too
I was trying to remember Dorian Concept’s name when I saw this thread pop up - the way he plays the Microkorg really makes any negativity surrounding the size or action of the keys moot.
There’s no question the guy can play.
I struggle with the fake knob turning though. Not always, of course. He’s working it for real, often enough. But he must have touched that mixer knob 50 times, and turned it exactly once.
Granted, I’m an instrumentalist, so I notice these things.
Anyway, microKORG… Amazing!
No excuses.
Cheers!
He’s insanely talented, just wish he’d release an album of raw jams like this
Anyway back on topic, I think I want an original MicroKorg
I’m pretty sure he’s working the delay time in that video John.
Yes, he uses the delay in plenty, like no one else!
