Clearest document on using Parts and Scenes is @Merlin’s “Thoughts on OT”.
The penny is starting to drop and I am starting to get very excited
So, given the help put forth by you wonderful people, I can now see that I can save 8 different loops (I will be working with loops more so than individual hits) to each of the 4 parts for a project. This means I can access to 32 different loops good to go which is a great start. I don’t think I will use track 8 as a master for this set.
Once I have this set up I can then create my patterns, pulling loops from the 4 parts, though keeping in mind that I can only use the 8 samples within a single part for the pattern.
This means that I can split the 16 patterns in bank A in to 2 and assign Part 1 to the first 8 patterns and part 2 to the second 8 patterns. I can then move to bank B and assign Part 3 to the first 8 patterns and part 4 to the second 8 patterns.
This will allow me to move through the song, knowing that in Bank A, patterns 1-8 are variants of the first 8 loops needed for the start of the track. Then, further in to the track I can move on to the second set of 8 patterns, which I will have loaded up with the 8 loops from part 2, needed for this section of the song. Following this I can then move to Bank B and the first set of 8 patterns loading from part 3 and then finally, Bank B and patterns 9-16, which I will have set to use Part 4 and the corresponding loops for the end of the track.
Does that make sense?
That may be a little excessive, I may not need to use all 4 parts and 32 loops for a track but if I did then I have access to a good lot of material it would seem.
I have structured the set in way that I use the OT every second song, meaning I can reload a new project and therefore a new set of Parts, banks and patterns for each track.
If this method works I should be good as I will know that my song is essentially broken down in to 4 sections and I will have the appropriate loops in each part loaded and good to go in the patterns for each section of the song.
Is my proposed method of working a little daft? I feel like I could cope with this without freaking out and stressing about where everything is.
Many thanks you lovely people!!
I find it easier to plock samples, rather than change parts, which can messy when you want to change FX :
Hold trig, turn Level knob and choose the sample.
The problem is that I would be changing several samples at once sometimes so say for Bank A, Patterns 1-8, I was using Part 1 with the following tracks;
1 - drumloop A
2 - drumloop B
3 - drumloop C
4 - vox A
5 - vox B
6 - Pads A
7 - Pads B
8 - Fills A
Then in the next part of the song I wanted to use the following 8 tracks assigned to Part 2 and on patterns 9-16;
1 - drumloop D
2 - drumloop E
3 - perc A
4 - vox C
5 - vox D
6 - Pads C
7 - Lead A
8 - Fills B
It would be a nightmare trying to plock all these.
Surely if I have all the patterns saved with the appropriate parts assigned then I shouldn’t have to worry about much aside from the likes of FX changes but I will keep effects very basic at this stage?
Thank you
Perhaps I’ve missed it, but I assume you’ve been working with the OT between videos/reading material? How’s it feeling so far?
It’s getting much better, had a really good day today as I played around in demo mode and, with the help of people on here, patterns, parts and banks now make a lot more sense. I’m also starting to get a feel for a workflow that may well save my ass.
I detailed my thoughts above and tomorrow I am going to load in the first 16 loops from one of my songs and split them between Parts 1 and 2. I will then create 16 patterns in Bank A using the tracks on Parts 1 and 2 and jam for a bit, see how it feels. Next I aim to start to get to grips with scenes as I was having a lot fo fun using scenes in demo mode.
I have to say that so far I am really loving the OT, can’t believe what an inspiring piece of kit it is, as I have been watching videos and reading up on it, my brain has been overwhelmed by the fantastic creative applications possible and I can’t wait to use the OT in my production process after the gig.
You actually have 4 parts per bank, so you can use 4 patterns per part in a bank if you wish…
Your next bank has its own 4 parts…
If you want to use sample locks as sezare56 suggested, you set it up beforehand. The first pattern would use the main track samples, the second pattern you set up with sample locks for the next section, the third pattern with different sample locks, all using the same part. Then you just switch patterns and all the next samples will play…
(After @Open_Mike
)
That depends how long are your loops, if there is only 1 plock per track and per pattern/part.
You have short loops, with different length ?
Maybe you misunderstood something : there are 4 parts per bank, 16 banks = 4x16 parts.
Wow, the possibilities are incredible!
I’m starting to get a little ahead of myself now and am going to pay to access the ask.audio video course and start that tomorrow as I still haven’t gotten my head around how to create such great dynamics using shorter samples. By that I mean in the demo in Pattern 1, the drum loop is quite short but they have sliced it in order to extend it out at points, create fills etc…I was literally going to just drop say a 4 bar loop with any necessary fills already made in the loop onto Track 1 in Part 1 but clearly there are many ways of using the OT to create a more dynamic and exciting drum part by using slicing or triggering. This part is still a little over my head so I will start at the beginning of the videos tomorrow.
The last thing I want though is to get too carried away at this stage and start trying to manipulate audio too much with the OT, not yet anyway, I’d risk trying to take on WAY too much WAY too soon.
Mate, trust me, the ask video is the best. I spent 6 months learning octa and then I watched the ask video and basically was pissed off that it wasn’t released earlier, as I spent loads of wasted time going around in circles and watching other tutorials, which were good, but just didn’t help things sink in - for me anyway. The ask video with Thavius is clear, concise and to the point + he delivers the info so much better than anyone else. I reckon it’ll hit the mark for you. Cheers
I highly recommend sticking with your original most basic, simple plan until you have the hang of it and know you can get through your set without surprises, and only then try to add more depth to it…
Perfect, going to start watching it in bed tonight. haven’t been this excited with a new piece of gear in years! Can’t believe I thought the OT was just a bit of a glorified playback machine, how stupid I was!!
This forum is an incredible resource also, just having so many people on hand to give advice is a real blessing, I’d have felt way in over my heard otherwise.
Am getting now lol so I’ll be off hahaha
Agreed, as soon as I get too excited and my head starts to fill with ideas and possibilities I start to get the fear and a headache lol
You just want to make sure you can pull it off, and not get too distracted with features… When you feel comfortable performing it in the most basic way, add more tricks…
Yeah, wise words.
Thanks everyone, off home to start watching the ask.audio videos
Ok, so I am getting there
After more manual reading and having watched the Ask.Audio videos I have decided to go with uploading the necessary loops between the 4 Parts for each bank and keeping to 16 patterns per song. I will have other hardware instruments on the go and with access to 32 different loops in the OT, spread over 16 patterns and the scenes, that will be plenty.
I am just going to keep it simple and use the drumloops as I have them as is, i.e. as loops and not as single hits reconstructed with the OT.
I think I am going to bypass using the 8th track as a master and instead route anything that needs some reverb out of the cue sends and into my mixing desk where I have reverb as a send. Means I won’t be able to programme in some nice beat repeat action on the entire pattern for use in scenes but such is life. Also I don’t want to compress the OT mix as the other songs being played live using drum machines and mono synths aren’t getting compressed so don’t see the point. Not compressing the entire OT mix will help with a sense of live continuity I’m thinking.
I’m assuming in each part I will have to route say tracks 7 and 8 to the cue output individually? Or can you set up the OT so that 7 and 8 always go to the cue out? Am in work and can’t check the manual but my brain is buzzing with excitement
No common settings for Cue routing, except the Studio Cue Mode. In normal mode, you have to unmute Cue to send it, not in Studio mode.
In Studio mode, you’ll mute Main+Cue at the same time, maybe better for you. You can also see Main+Cue levels at the same time.
