Hydrasynth from ASM

As someone who bought a Summit as my main “analog” polysynth, I can say that I like my Hydra Desktop better. As others have mentioned, it’s unapologetically digital, but also incredibly flexible with a great UI. The Summit/Peak is a great synth, but just too in-between for me. With the cost of the Hydras these days, it seems like a no-brainer.

I happened to recently get an MKS-70 in a trade, so now I have another DCO-hybrid poly, and I just bit the bullet with an OB-6 module for the “true” analog poly experience. My Summit will go up for sale, but I don’t see ever getting rid of my Hydra. I like the Summit/Peak sound, but I don’t “love” it, and the UI feels a bit cluttered to me.

Personal taste and all, but I agree with others here that a Hydra will put a smile on your face, and if you really want fat analog, consider a lower-tier Moog at some point. The Hydra is perfectly capable of sounding “thick” and even “fat,” and with all the various modulations it can easily even sound “huge.”

I tried the Take 5 the other day when I auditioned a P5 and the OB-6, and it really just didn’t do it for me. It’s a fine basic polysynth, but there’s a reason it’s at the price point it’s at relative to other Sequentials (I have a Pro 3 also). The P5 and OB-6 blew it out of the water. The effects also sounded really poor to me, which is interesting, since the effects on the OB-6 and P-6 sound really good–maybe it’s what my grandmother used to say, “you can’t put in what god left out” (of the oscillators and filter). My grandmother was a Moog Grandmother.
