How would you recreate this style of techno with RYTM?

How would one recreate this style of techno on the RYTM? Could it be done? Beyond the 909 samples, what might be going on here? There seems to be some sort of a wooden sound or sample in the percussion that permeates each of these tracks. I have always been in love with Ilian Tape and would love to be able to dissected and recreate the process used to create these types of beats?

Definitely in the same vein, except maybe a bit less dark.
It’s just as gritty, though.

I’d definitely say you’d need to use more samples than analog sounds to make stuff like this and gently overdrive and filter everything.
The kicks could be analog, but most of the top end and mid sounds seem to be sampled, albeit with a lot of filters, etc.
It’s hard to say because the Zenkers and Skee Mask, etc tend to DJ live and use laptops.
I’ve never been able to get a look at what they’re actually using.

lots of single synth hits like toms, or HPF bass synths. might also be FXed break beat sample pieces in there. those be my guesses.

yeah, i definitely hear the breakbeat sample pieces…
anyone can recommend some quality breakbeats as such that would be ideal for sampling?

A friend of mine throws parties in New York and he had the Zenkers play a show and he had them over at his studio chilling and they were saying Stenny actually uses mostly Electron stuff (A4 / RYTM & I think Octatrack). He actually convinced them to buy an Octatrack that same day because they liked it so much… you can see it in their Slices interview. But yeah, dope label for sure. Been following Dario since 2007. Good shit.

Wish I could but in my experience the best breaks aren’t recommended, they’re discovered after hours of digging. They only really come alive after being heavily manipulated.

In that Slices interview the track they’re playing has an Amen snare in it and they talk specifically about using breaks.
Most of the sounds that they use definitely sound sampled.

Records like their album, Skee Mask, Aught records, and U on ManMakeMusic got me out of most of my old analog synths and back into sampling.
The A4 is the only one that matches that style for me now.
It just sounds deep and blurred.
You could easily get the same sound out of the AR.

This U track is a little more jack than techno, but you can definitely tell it’s all samples from older records.
I love the aesthetic.

Rewatching it just now I guess I didn’t notice just how much outboard gear and synths they have.
I spotted a Korg Polysynth and DSI Tempest among many, many other things.

That is pretty basic stuff, you could easily recreate that on either the AR or OT, as mentioned earlier it is just filtered drums, a few hpf synth parts, etc, no challenge for the OT or AR to make any of those sounds.

I’ve found your druma pack to be greatly useful but I find the hats to be fairly lacking for the techno/minimal sound that I’m after.

Sure, those sound like processed 909 hats, some ride cymbal, and perhaps some other sampled hats tuned down a bit. The closed hat has a pretty short decay and sounds sample based rather than analog. For minimal techno hats short closed hats and varying degrees of shortness for the open hats should get you in the ballpark.

So good to see a Skee Mask joint in here. I’m a real fan.

It is simple but the processing and mixing is grade A, really!

You could do yourself a massive favor and shortcut a lot of steps by buying an Emu sampler, post Eiii. A Roland S770 would also be a big help (even an MV). This would give you a tonal quality really consistent with Skee’s tunes.

The next thing I’d do is look carefully at the spread of frequencies throughout the tunes. Understand how frequencies are spaced and don’t be scared to mix some frequency specific sounds quite low in the mix. Jamming on start and end points and D/S/R in the amp ENVs will give you that hat/shaker magic. Sounds brilliantly mastered too.

Could you do precisely this with an Elektron box? Yes and no.

If the tone is what turns you on, then no. But the AR will give you some equally awesome and usable vibes. But I hear a lot of samples, probably ones that the guy has kept for a few years now…
