How versatile is the FM synthesis on the RYTM?

I’ve been recently obsessing over FM/additive synthesis. I was even strongly considering cancelling my RYTM preorder, and getting a Monomachine instead.

My question is: how does the FM synthesis on the RYTM compare to the Monomachine, or any other FM synth for that matter? I’m guessing it’s more stripped down than the Monomachine’s FM. Does the RYTM being analog bring anything new to how FM synthesis can sound?

The FM Kick and Snare machines are designed for percussion. With some experimentation you might be able to get some decent chromatic synth sounds from them but I find them very limited. I’ve owned a number of true FM synths over the years. If I were to rate the AR’s FM capabilities as just a synth (and not percussion) it would be near the bottom of the list. There simply aren’t enough parameters to do what you probably would like to do.

The more I play with the Rytm, the more I see that it’s meant as an analog drum machine rather than a synth. I suppose I’ll need to pick up the A4 to compliment my Rytm’s percussion duties.
