I’m trying to learn bass guitar. I try to find some resourses to study and understand more and more
Now i’m trying to hear the songs i like and groove over it but i feel i don’t progress anymore
Theese days, i’m focus on Greek Modes and the E minor pentatonics
There are some things i like and i’m fully researching to trying to understand more because i think thoose things could make any bass lines interestings. Thoose things are the LICKS or the PHRASES
Anyone here have more insight of how be proeminet on LICKS or PHRASES?
Not sure what equipment you have but a looper is insanely good for working on the chops! I’ll quickly loop a guitar groove and pick up the bass! Fun and simple!
sit on table, use two hands: clap, slap, tip, flip, zip, what ever you want, dont forget to use sometime the open hand flat on the surface or your fist/palm in between. Now same rythm you find with just the flat hand or fist/palm - there you go… thats your bassline.
record, or be creative recreate each of the flip’n punching experiences… in example by reverting a base drum and like-like
ps: works also when drumming on your own belly, beware it might tingle
Study and learn as many bass lines as you can.
You’ll develop BOTH your finger dexterity and your ears.
Regarding licks and phrases, learn all the flashy neck runs you like, but make sure you’re still locked into the groove while playing them.
Nothing worse than a flashy bass player who can’t keep the groove.
Been there.
Done that.
all those days, i was seeing pub of walking bas everywhere… and because your sugestion i do some research on youtube and found very interesting stuffz and reaaly like this one
FWIW, I’ve noticed some classic funk has a “heavy on the one” every two bars, rather than every bar. So you can “do whatever you feel like” for two bars, if that’s what you feel like.
I had one lesson with a bass guitar teacher. He showed me me how to play bass with my fingers and where to put the thumb when I’m not using it.
Honestly though after that one lesson, the majority of my learning has come from playing along with songs, trying to copy the bass player’s part. Of course I had to pick songs that had bass lines that were within my capabilities - eg. most Police songs yes, “Teen Town” hell nah.
Believe it or not the playalong method works. And yes you will also pick up ideas for fills/licks/phrases if you do it for enough time and do a bit of thinking.
Oh, and I joined a band too. Playing with a real drummer is a great experience for a beginning bass player. The band was focused on original music, so I had opportunities to create my own bass lines and get feedback from the band mates. I came up with simple D note that I just plucked and held for this one song and they just loved it so much - always smiling at me when it was time for that one D note.
I haven’t played bass for years and finally got a good bass guitar again just a few days ago. My plan is to do what I mention above. I recently became a fan of Tiran Porter so I’m studying a lot of his stuff. He’s a master of groove, fills/phrases/whatever, knowing when to just groove in a simple way and when to do the fills/phrases/whatever. Oh and by “study” I mean pulling up a track and actually trying to play along with Tiran on my bass, not just listening.
