How to backup digitakt & digitone?

Hello Elektronauts!

Whats the best and easiest way to backup my complete digitakt?
Please can someone here write me a little step by step guidance?

And is this the same way i can backup my Digitone?

Thank you very very much!

Sorry for that, but I searched also in the forum for a backup tutorial, but i find it a little bit confusing…

Have a nice weekend!

Download c6 and the transfer app from elektron.se

Digitakt can back up projects as sysex files using c6 and it backs up samples using the transfer app. Sysex dump information for the digitakt can be found on page 62 of the manual in section 15.4.

Open the transfer app, select explore. Drag and drop your samples off the digitakt to wherever you need to on your computer.

Be aware that there is no good way to backup DT projects and patterns. It can be done, but there’s no convenient way, and we’re all hoping for a better solution.

Thank you! Tomorrow i will test it : )

It’s working the way it is. Yeah it’s not as convient as most would like but it’s actually quite easy to do. Especially if you are looking to back up the entire box as the op is asking.

You kinda make it sound like it doesn’t work when it does. Sorry if I’m misreading though.

Will Overbridge be able do backups?

It hasn’t been stated whether it will or not.

Well, you have to keep track of your samples and your projects, patterns, since they aren’t saved together. The sequencer data and samples are not contained together, and even moving patterns between projects in the DT is a major hassle. It works, but it is not a convenient or good backup solution. But yes, it works.

I don’t know, but I think I heard Cenk say in an interview that they were working on a better backup solution, and one could speculate that this might be intertwined with OB.

That would be great… it works as-is with a little discipline, but the sysex backup is dead slow.

Digitakt

  1. Install transfer application on a computer and transfer all samples on the +Drive to your computer

  2. Sysex dump each project to your computer.

For back up of the entire state of the machine, what the op asked about, it’s not really all that complex. Project sysex files will find samples locations in the plus drive and populate the project ram with the proper samples etc., even if sample are reorganized before being transferred back to the machine. Super simple assuming it’s just a back up of the state of the machine to restore later.

The problems that arise come when doing selective back ups and trying to swap patterns between projects. Then it can be a hassle depending on how organized the plus drive is, how one constructs the project ram, etc.

Really good tutorial!!
Thank you for sharing it.

Hey guys,

I’m trying to backup my Digitakt via C6. It seems to be working but it is taking ages. I worked with sysex before and of course it is not fast. But at the moment it is sending one project for about an hour with no end in sight, is that normal?

Edit:
I have hooked up the Device to a iMac via USB

It would be great if we could save patterns together with sounds and samples, that would unlock my dreams :star_struck:

Never mind, it is now way faster since I changed the Midi setting to just USB instead of Midi+USB. Sorry.

I tried once to backup, and import my project back in digitakt. something went wrong, and I lost all my songs!!! (about an entire project…). (I did the way you said).

I wil NEVER do it again. too dangerous.

Elektron has to make something serious and efficient. A backup in digital era is essential.
unacceptable from elektron… When I bought digitakt, I was hoping for something to happen with overbridge to load/save projects. It never came. And I’m not talking for digitone… :expressionless: . Elektron can’t say we play with hardware for not using computer, they made overbridge…

however it seems there’s a solution (a partial one) as https://electric.kitchen/crunch/elk-herd/ has made. And I think that guy has more to show with his program. but do elektron listens?
