listen to a lot more punk than metal, but i still dig it… plus plenty of other genres too

I used to be a massive metal head ! I started drumming when I was 9, so I got into a lot of the insanely speedy drumming of Dave Lombardo from Slayer, and went from there. Sepultura, Iron Maiden, old Metallica, then moved on to the more soulful side of drumming and listened to Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, Suicidal Tendencies.
Got into electronic music through trip hop and compilations like Rebirth of Cool. As a drummer, it was only a matter of time until I would get addicted to making basslines and chords on my own, without needing a band
The rest is history, I suppose !

Grandpa Jourgenson?
Industrial was the bridge. That and some of the lo-fi/DIY/Riot Grrrl stuff of the early ‘90s. My electronic introduction was Aphex’s “On” single (US)–it had that lo-fi grit plus the industrial pummel, and I was hooked.
I’m a huge Justin Broadrick fan, but when I first heard Godflesh I wasn’t into it (aka didn’t get it) because I thought it was–get this–too “metal”!
Can’t say I’m that into metal in general, but I have huge respect for Napalm Death for the stuff members have made after being in that band, and I really dig Gorguts’ “Obscura”. Epic. Meshuggah has some nice stuff, too.
I like their first album
And this absolute gem that never got released in any other format than the music video as far as I know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU0sNLBDS08

I had a brief Pantera / Sepultura / ‘Ride The Lightning’ era Metallica phase when I was about 14 but the lyrics used to make me cringe so I kind of lost interest. Still love a bit of Tool / RATM / System Of A Down every now and then tho.
I used to play guitar and passed grade 8 (uk) when I was 16, but just after passing the exam I went to Phoenix Festival '96 and saw Prodigy / Chemical Bros / CJ Bolland / the Metalheadz showcase and just a massive load of top notch dance music live. That weekend pretty much ended my interest in playing in bands and all the grim ‘shredding’ solo stuff they teach you at higher guitar grades.
As soon as I got home I tracked down Octamed for my Amiga and got a sampling module and wrote a load of really bad jungle

Used to be a hardcore metal head…
metal as religion
…
My favourite album from 2013, sucks they split up. You should check “Wife”, he’s the former guitarist of altar of plagues.
Yup - Back in the 80’s that was all the go!
Judas Priest, Ingy J M, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath etc
Winger, Cinderella, Motley Crue
And of course the godfathers who arguable started it all, Deep Purple
currently living a renaissance of being a metal head …
playing a lot of original prog metal in tasmania at the moment.
also hoping to include the Machinedrum in a metal context, for the drummer to play, although ultimately i have the feeling most metal drummers just prefer a good drumkit, which is totally understandable.
Oh yeah…love metal and still follow it though I’m finding less and less groundbreaking acts. I transitioned into IDM and breakcore, and pretty much 95% of my music has some influence, sample, structural feel of metal. I just ordered an OT so I’m hoping to load it up with aggression. Like many, I’m into Meshuggah, Tool, Faith No More, Pantera…for those looking for some different stuff, try Blotted Science, old Candiria, The Algorithm, Whourkr, Genghis Tron, and the latest Cattle Decapitation release.
My musical evolution was something like this…
Old School Electro > Hip Hop > Indie > Prog > Goth > Punk > Industrial >Techno > Breaks > Aphex Twin > IDM > Glitch > Jazz

I go in and out with all different styles of music, as much as I love throwing down some bumping beats on a dance floor, there’s plenty of days I wish I was in a band with ripping heavy guitars and brutal screaming…
For one reason or another, me and guitar players never last working together for more then a hand full of songs…happens every time.
I would have to say, Between the buried and me, and Royal Thunder, are two of my favorite bands right now.
don’t get into metal too much anymore but I’m pretty much all over the map when it comes to metal
also very huge into late 80’s - early 00 hardcore punk
speaking of metal just read about this

Used to and still do daily…
Hardcore habits never die
–Woke up to some Inside Out the other day (no spiritual surrender) and followed through with some Melvins.
-Helmet for breakfast is a sure sign its going to be a hardcore day
–EyeHateGod
-Early Sabbath (but can’t stand the cheesy solos they go off on!)
–Tools first 3 albums
-Deftones… no stopping those cats. I saw them in Philly(hometown) and the Roots showed up… off the hinges.
–Early NIN-
–QUICKSAND
-Orange 9mm
–Pantera
What the fuck am I doing, this shit will go on for pages…
Neurosis- Tribes OF Neurot
RATM-Fantomas-Tomahawk-Ministry-Fishbone-CKY- and it goes on and on with a bunch of laval bands that most never heard of and most are all dead now anyways x_x
I am in my early to later 30’s and can see myself at 90 still runnin shit in the pit. With my cane and my old nuts tucked in my sock as a weapon just in case.

GREAT THREAD! HAHAHAHAH Ive always wondered the same.
I am an avid metal head, but not as much as I used to be. Tech, black, death, sludge, hardcore . Those were heydays.
Alot of my tracks I do now have a heavy influence of my passion for metal I had back then. I guess it never leaves
Ive translated a few of my old riffs to synths which is always fun.
The combo of mixing my love for metal and electronic music is a journey that is slowly coming to fruition.
BTW alot of good recommendations for bands I haven’t heard of , or listened to in a long time . Thanks everyone. since we are sharing tunes , here is a fantastic album. Seeing them with behemoth, goatwhore, and 1349 next month!

Sorry for the Necro. Thought about starting a new thread but eh.
Anyone have any good band recommendations these days? It’s weird to have grown up with bands and these days it just seems like it’s not a thing. Not even necessarily metal, I guess it’s referred to as hard rock these days. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.
It’s weird the way modern band festivals are still dominated by names like Radiohead Metallica and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Why hasn’t new blood come through?
I don’t know if I’m just blind to it. Obviously things kinda have gone in a Mac de Marco Tame Impala direction. Tycho.
After Tool and that sort of stuff I never really followed the nu metal stream but ended up more with bands like Russian Circles, Isis, Jakob. Rosetta, Pelican etc. cool stuff.
It’s been a while since I’ve been in the loop so I’m not super sure what’s out there now.
Drums bass guitar distortion and vocals, just interested to here modern approaches if anyone knows any. I’m not heaps into screamo vibes tbh Rosetta and Isis often kinda annoyed me with all the scowling, but there were enough musical things to keep me hooked.

Count me in ! I’ve been listening mostly to Metal and Hardcore Punk from 10 to 16 years old I think, then got into electronic via Come To Daddy as many in metal land I guess.
I’m still listening to a lot of metal nowadays, even more extreme as before as I listen to a lot of quieter things.
I also still play a little bit of guitar and bass and use those in a few tracks. For the curious here is a track I released a few years ago, the label guys who are good friends and big metal fans as well asked to go as metal possible, and I ended up doing this:

This sounds like Igorrr. vs. Atari Teenage Riot.
