The jump guy!
Have you no shame? lol
No. He’s drunk again.
The concept of getting yourself out there, going to gigs, trying to play live resonates with me.
I’m a professional bass player and electronic music has mostly been a hobby for me. About 18 months ago, a friend started a residency at a local Nashville club. It features 5 bands a week doing short 30 minute sets. Mostly roots/americana/rock type music ( I live in Nashville…not really an electronic music mecca). My role is to play my own electronic sets between bands while they’re setting up/tearing down gear. Some nights I’d get lots of compliments, but often you get drowned out by bands sound checking, or endlessly noodling over your stuff. Slowly, people started paying more attention and some claim my sets are the only reason they come to this residency, so over time, it’s gotten more respect and a few musicians I admire greatly count themselves as fans. Some things that have come out of this so far;
I was hired to do two remixes for local post punk band, Palm Ghosts
A drummer and two guitarists recorded alongside my electronic music to transform it into more of a psych rock project…pretty interesting.
I got hired as a session ‘keyboardist’ on a more modern rock record…they encouraged me to just “do what you do.”
Two different artists have approached me about collaborating on their next releases.
A terrific singer/lyric writer asked if he could write words and sing over my existing tracks…it’s my favorite thing I’ve done in years. We have rough demos for over 30 songs and have begun recording a proper record. Other great musician friends asked if they could be involved as they loved the concept as well. Hopefully, we’ll have a full length record ready for release by the end of the year with two drummers, guest singers, several guitar players, horn players, etc. It’s becoming something of a community art project.
So while the gigs I took on can be humbling, it’s yielded some super fun opportunities…gotta get yourself out there!
Really glad to see that you chimed in on this!
Hate and love this part so much at the exact same time! ![]()
This sort of grassroots-level success story resonates so hard with me that I’m going to blow a speaker soon, absolutely top-tier motivational stuff for anyone putting themselves out there and a great example of “the grind” working out.
Remember to share the record on here when it’s out!
